Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : A fix for the annoying daylight msg?

With people like reinbeau and RVRodie and others around who have
done so much for us to make our IQue's even better - here's a
problem begging for a solution:
It's cute the Ique switches from Daylight to nighttime mode - BUT,
why on earth do we have to click ok before each switch. Eg, this
AM at 6:20 I turned it on, and it said Switching to night mode,
ok? So I pressed the dismiss box. 10 minutes later, it said
switching to daylight mode, ok? The only thing I could do was
again click ok. I love the reinbeau utility to dismiss the Garmin
warning every time you turn on the GPS, is there a way to
say ok automatically to the goofy daylight/night time display
message? ;)

Queiet is a JMckie utility that gets rid of the startup screen warning.
You do know that the daylight warning will disappear on it's own in a few short moments if you ignore it?

Oops my mistake about the Authors of some of these fine utilities people
write. I guess you are right about the messages going away after a while, but they seem to come up just when I'm trying to do something on the GPS!

Don't do things right at the time of sunrise or sunset, then.
If you aren't doing things with the unit right then, it disappears on its own. If you are doing things, then you are probably tapping the screen anyway, thus a single extra tap shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience, as far as I see it.
If you mean that it happens right after you turn GPS on, all the time, then I start suspecting that you are changing the clock on the iQue, manually, now and then, thus forcing a shift over the day/nighttime border, when the GPS corrects the time for you.
But perhpas you mean just using the iQue in general, not particularily the GPS part of it?

:) Thanx for the compliment, but I'm no utility writer, I'm just a Palm enthusiast turned into an iQue enthusiast. Advice I can give, but not programming! :)

It's like Anders is saying.
You don't have to tap OK, just wait 2 seconds or so, and the message dissappears.

It is still a very annoying and useless message. The change in map background colour is enough to tell you it has changed. The popup has no 'cancel' option to prevent the change, so what's the point? It is going to change background colour regardless of user input, so why not get on with it and not annoy the user?
Another annoyance is trying to change a waypoint symbol. If you tap on a waypoint on the map you have to go to the info page, then 'edit waypoint', then 'location', then 'Show Info'. Finally, and this really gets me, when you tap on 'Done' it doesn't take you back to any screen you've been through, but to the Address list page!!!

I'm with Wiggers on this one. That message really irritates me when i run afoul of it. It really is quite pointless.

A new user may be confused regarding what happens. The best would probably be one of these checkboxes: "Don't show this message again".

If you've been using it at night, then turn it on the next day, do you not see the message then?

He probabaly doesn't notice it because it goes away by itself, just like the GPS warning screen. Doesn't bother me. Probably just used to it.

I guess I don't get all the uproar over a message that goes away  I see it every once in awhile, but only if the iQue is on at sunset or sunrise, never when I turn it on at other times.

Ann is right (again). It shows up only if you are using the GPS, when sunset or sunrise occurs. Otherwise, the colors are just different when you open the map image.
The 3600a includes a general night-mode setting as well, which works with all programs (better or worse) on the unit. It's separate fromt he map setting, so you don't have to change colors in your Datebook, if you don't want to, even if you do change colors in the map.

I beg to differ! I have just turned my unit on, using the Q button, having not used it since earlier this afternoon. Top of the display reads 'GPS is Off' and the background was amber. After about 15-20 seconds I got the wretched sunset message and the background turned black.

Wiggers,
My ique would do the same thing. Found out that I had backupman set to do and automatic backup during the night. Backupman would start and backup my data then shutoff. However during this time the screen did not have a change to change during the backup so when I turned on the ique the next time it would change to night mode even though it was not day time. Once it figured out that it was day it would change back to day mode. I changed my automatic backup time so that it ran duriing lunch. I have not had a problem since.

If the last time you used it for GPS was in the daylight mode, and it's now night time, it will switch and you'll get that message when you turn it on. The opposite will happen when it is first turned on in daylight.
Is it still on or did it go off after a short moment?

But I run CardBackup every night, at 3:00, and I don't see this message anyway.
Not on the 3600a, at least...

It's probably due to the difference between incremental and differential backups. :D
Besides (not to Anders), I don't get what everyone is concerned about. Sounds very nit-picking to me.

I think this happens when I have turned the unit off with the map display on. That would cause the screen to try to change to night mode.

Could be.
Obvious remedy: Don't!
Besides (mostly to cat), yes, it is nit-picking. But when we have no other things to pick, we pick nits.
Or become knights, who say Nih.

In the Maps Preferences you can change the Colors option from Auto to Day or Night. The message might not show up then.
Good Luck

I'd much rather calculate the carrying capacity of two unladen swallows for carrying coconuts....:)

I guess JMckie's app that taps the GPS screen automatically for us is becoming common place enough that it's thought to be part of the OS. Good job Joseph!!

Personally I don't find it annoying. In fact, quite the opposite. When I see it happen, I am grateful that Betty was thoughtful enough to fix the display mode for me.

Actually, it doesn't annoy me when I'm actually navigating. Just when I'm turning on the device to do something specific or while I'm working on something. It's just the interruption in the flow of what I'm doing that I don't like. Admittedly it's not the first change I'd ask for from Garmin.
