Answering my own question, but starting a new thread in case everyone's ignoring my earlier one....

It seems the unique machine id IS changed! At least, mine was

I discovered this thanks to that nice Jakub of JS Solutions (WinEpoc). He keeps a database of customers, their machine ids, and their registrations.

When I had upgraded, WinEpoc needed re-registering. Thinking the existing registration had been corrupted or lost during the upgrade I emailed asking for my registration number again. The number would not work. When we compared my existing machine id against the number he had stored for me they were different!!!
He then sent me a new number based on my new ID and it works perfectly

So, this is worth bearing in mind if you have a number of Shareware apps that were registered referencing the machine id
