Please could people post their views on the pros and cons of the 1gb IBM Microdrive against the Compact Flash.

People have mentioned that there are certain issues with the 1gb IBM Microdrive (CF size). Things like it takes time to start up etc..

Is anyone running the ipaq 3970 with CF Expansion pack and either Microdrive or CF card?

Much appreciated.

I have compact flash cards (only 256MB), but just from the stand point that the CF doesn't have any moving parts would be a good enough reason to get it. Dropping it or any other type of impacts would be less liekly to damage it.

I have a 3955 and I asked myself the same question just a couple of days ago. I needed more memory, but didn't know what to get. I justified my purchase like this:

Even if I get a Microdrive/CF memory, I'd still have a memory slot not being used (the SD slot). I want to get other CF devices in the future, like and 802.11b wireless card, or a GPS CF card. Besides, most CF sleeves only have one CF slot, so if I got CF memory or a Microdrive I'd have to swap out the 802.11b card and put the memory card in if I wanted to access the information there. I figured that if I bought an SD card it would only be used for memory and I'd never have to remove it, so I purchased a 256MB card from PCMall for $133 shipped.

So my con for the microdrive would be that it would take up a valuable CF slot.

I have an IBM 1G Microdrive (purchased when I had a 3630) and a 512M SD card. Since getting a 3970 and purchasing the SD I only use the microdrive is to perform a CMA backup. The SD is the reason I upgraded so that I would never have to carry around an expansion sleeve just to have the additional space for files and programs.
