Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Can't find Rest Areas in POI lists

I cannot figure out how to find upcoming
interstate rest areas in any of the POI lists on
my M5.
Can someone help me? Are they embedded
in the basemap, or on the loaded detail maps?
I KNOW they're there somewhere.

This is for the iQue 3600 but it may still be applicable.

edit: also check under Services/"Rest Area/Tourist Info"

The POIs are part of the detailed maps. The POI categories and subcategories displayed in MapSource seem to be identical to those displayed on the M5. In the North American 6 City Select maps, the closest thing I could find to a rest area was 'Truck Stop', and this was listed under several categories.

There is no "services" category. It sounds
from those links like there is no way to see
upcoming rest areas with the iQue. This is
a rather large omission in the POI list.
The best suggestion sounds like the one
advising me to bring along another
GPS that has the rest area info. Hmmm.
Guess I better not chuck any of my old units.

I don't have an M5 but on my iQue aside from the -Services/"Rest Area/Tourist Info" which you say you don't have, I can also pick "All Points of Interest" and search for "Rest Areas" and turn up quite a few. Have you tried that?
Also when routing you have additional options such as near route, etc.

I just checked my G10 and only when I zoom down to 300ft can I see all the POI including rest stops etc.

Strange - AFAICT the M5 does not show the Services/"Rest Area/Tourist Info that the 3600 did, yet they use the same detailed mapping POI software. I wonder why?

I went back to MapSource and found that, although the M5 seems for the large part to mirror the place category/place subcategory lists in MapSource, it doesn't do this fully. I found 'Rest Area/Tourist Info' in MapSource in the 'Other' category, but the M5 doesn't have it.
I have multiple mapsets installed in MapSource, however, and I'm not sure if the POI database is aggregated from all the maps installed or only from the detailed maps that you currently have selected. I might, for example, be picking up the rest areas from NA City Select 5 while I'm looking at NA City Select 6, but only the POIs from NA CS 6 are copied to the M5 when you upload maps.
Perhaps someone out there with more MapSource experience can answer this question.

Since the device is for traveling, I can only assume that since the M5 has a removable battery and the iQue does not, that Garmin didn't see the need for rest stops. :D

I found Rest Area in my POI's. I have the GPS 10. Just go under all POI's and enter the word Rest. What I find is if you enter Rest Area it will go past it and you will need to scroll up to find it.
I've noticed this on many of my searches for POI's. So I just enter partial entries to get what I need.

Here is what I have been able to discover.
On the computer I can find rest areas in the
services category grouped with travel information
outlets. If you type in "Rest" you will see all
of them that are unnamed, but there are others
that lead with a town or park name which will
be missed if you don't ask for all services.
This is using "City Select".
The M5 will show rest areas if you are
scaled down to .2 mi or below, but that gives
you less warning of the approach of a rest
area than the signs along the road. There
seems to be NO reference to rest areas
in any of the indexes.
I have an older version of "Metroguide"
and its POI index shows no rest areas at all,
nor does the map display them.
I have been toying with finding all the rest
areas along a given corridor on the computer,
then finding each one (individually) and
putting them into my_locations. Kind of
a kluge, but it gets me part of the way.

I think CC gave links to this already but here's a short version of how it works with the 3600:
Rest areas are only given along highways and some other major roads and they are on the iQue basemap, not on the detailed map. So an easy way to see rest areas is to deselect detailed maps, put detail to high and look along the road you're going along on the basemap.
I suppose, but can't be sure, that the basemap is the same for the Que software.
NB: It's on the iQue basemap, not on the Mapsource PC basemap. It is possible to import the iQue world map to Mapsource on PC (see other forum). It has more detail than the Mapsource map plus you can get coverage for the whole world.
Basemap shuffling should be part of a FAQ.

If I turn off all downloaded maps, I cannot see
any rest areas even in places where I know
they exist.
Is the basemap containing these POIs the
standard, default basemap that comes with
the M5 out of the box? Or has it been
loaded subsequently?

Have you tried a search using "Lodging"? I would think its results would net you the rest stops that you are looking for.
QueFind >> Lodging >> Search "near current location" or "route destination."
or
From the QueFind screen, tap Catagories >> POI >> Food and Drink >> American. Doing this pulled up a bunch of coffee shops and fast food strip malls/rest areas.
or tap Catagories >> POI >> Shopping >> Convienience. this pulled up a list of 7-11's, Gas-Mini-Marts etc.
I am sure one of the above searches will locate your rest stops.

This approach does not find the reat areas along interstate highways.
The best I can do is find and mark them on my desktop PC, and then search "my loactions" for the ones that I found.
Not exactly user friendly...
