Here's a tough one,
Has anybody out there linked a Psion 7 to a Samsung A300 via infra-red?
I want to run fax/data through it so that I can use it for SMS.

What driver do I need? Does anyone have it?

How do I install the driver on to the phone using the Psion infra-red since I do not have infra-red on my PC?

Please help me, somebody!

Here's a tough one Why?
Has anybody out there linked a Psion 7 to a Samsung A300 via infra-red?There are Psion users (not necessarily S7) connecting to the internet with the Samsung A300 and Infrared.
I want to run fax/data through it so that I can use it for SMSHaving the ability to use the phone for Fax and/or Data calls has nothing whatsoever to do with SMS messaging.

How do I install the driver on to the phone using the Psion infra-red since I do not have infra-red on my PC?You don't use modem drivers with a Psion.

OK, let's start at the beginning. If all you want to do is send and receive SMS messages, you need to have a modem definition configured for the Samsung A300 in "Control Panel / Modems". Open the modems applet and tap "New". Try these settings:

Name - Samsung A300
Speed - 57600
Connect - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto
------------------
Init (reset) - ATZ (or try AT&F)
Data - (blank)
Fax - (blank)
------------------
Flow - Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked
Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked
Type - Mobile
------------------

Now open the Email application and go in the menus to "Tools > Account settings > SMS". In the details tab, set the Mobile phone line to "Samsung A300". Enable IR on the phone and line it up with the Psion. Tap the "Edit" button and the Psion should read the SMS Centre number from the phone. This number must be in full international format, that is, Country code, Area code, Number but as one continuous string and without the usual leading plus sign. If it isn't in this format, edit it. Tap OK to close the dialog box. You should now be able to create an SMS message on the Psion, save it to Outbox then, after enabling IR on the phone, send it from the menus "Transfer > send from outbox > SMS".

You now have a modem configuration for the phone. If you want to connect to the internet, you can set up the details for your ISP in "Control Panel > Internet". Basically, all you need is the phone number, your Username and your Password. IP and DNS addresses are normally obtained from the server so just tick those boxes and that should be it (provided your phone is enabled for Data calls).

Cheers mate!
Sending text works like a dream now.
Only problem is, the machine still won't synchronise with my phone, so I can't collect texts i have recieved from my phone to my S7 inbox.
Do I need to change anything or is this feature simply not supported by the A300?

the machine still won't synchronise with my phone I don't know the answer to that one because there is nothing else to configure.

The alternative is to try "PhoneMan Pro" from www.zenobyte.com which might be more successful.

Hey, Mike - how about it? Could be a whole new career! I have enough problems with computers at the moment! I decided to replace Windows 2000 in my dual boot setup with Windows XP Pro which worked OK, except I lost my original OS. Restoring that from the recovery CD has destroyed Win XP and now the PC has no OS at all! Grrr!

No can help on that one At least I've got Win ME up and running now so if I follow instructions properly, I should be able to reinstall either 2000 or XP Pro again :)

In theory yes, but everyone knows that the instructions don't work when it comes to Windows !! lol

Mike

Sounds like you've been having a tough time with that dual-boot system - hope I'm not getting any of the blame! ;)

Just in case this information is useful to anyone:
I have just found out that the EPOC SMS synchronisation which I said doesn't work, does work with an Orange pay as you go SIM, but not on an o2 one. Go figure.

I'm on o2 and my SMS synch works - more figuring required! ;)

Are you sure that it was the different SIM that allowed it to work and not the fact that you removed the phone's battery thereby "resetting" it? I cannot see how the phone's ability to 'sync' (that is download SMS messages from phone to Psion) should be related to the SIM that is installed. Sending SMS is of course a different matter and the correct 'SMS Centre' number must be in the Psion's settings.

Ever get the feeling you're out of your depth?
I have tried several times and in different ways to get my S7 working with both SIMs. The orange consistently works and the o2 has never worked, though I can send SMS through it (I think this eliminates the possibility that having the incorrect service centre is the problem?).
I know this doesn't make any sense but like they say, truth is stranger than fiction!
Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

Just a small thought - mine is an o2 SIM on a contract, not PAYG. I don't really see why that should make any difference, but it might?

Baffling.
