In my quest to find a serial port cable for my M5, I remebered that someone had taken apart the iQue 3600 cradle and discovered that it was fairly easy to add an RS232 connector to it.

This post and the next contain pictures of the M5 cradle internals.

Obscured behind the connector in the first picture is the fact that the first 4 pins from the left are labelled 'automotive' (first 2 for external speaker and next 2 for power), the next 5 (difficult to see with the connector in the way) are labelled 'usb', and the last 2 (?) are labelled 'RS232'.

The blurry label on the picture of the underside says 'VBUS'.

I am curious to know how similar this is to the iQue 3600 cradle, and whether anyone would care to make any guesses as to which DB9 pins to solder where.

Also, if I recall correctly, the iQue 3600 cradle had a resistor that was used to select whether the connector was USB or serial. Is anyone aware of a similar requirement for the M5?

I am more than willing to buy a sacrificial cradle if anyone is willing to provide some feedback... :)

I just dismantled the car mount and the internals seem to be identical to those of the cradle, with the exception that only the first 4 pins are connected (as per the labels on the board mentioned previously). Also, the last 3 pins (not 2 as I thought earlier) are labelled RS232, with the leftmost pin of these being shared with those labelled USB.

Looks like I would be better off buying a sacrificial car mount and adding the RS232 cable to that. At least that way I would have one less thing to carry when I go scuba diving and need to transfer dives from my dive computer to the M5 via the serial port.
