At long jolly last, I have managed to find a GPS 10 in the UK and ordered it today. It should be with me tomorrow morning if all goes well.

To help prep my brain for it, are there any nasties or whammies I should expect?

Let me be the first to offer congratulation and I am sure you will play with it day and night.:D

PS The only "whammy" I came across happened when I installed the maps. Just follow the instruction and don't do like me, knowing better then the poorly made up booklet.:(

Thanks Mont of the Eg clan. Was there anything spooky about the Bluetooth connection setup?

The BT connection setup is a piece of cake!

No problem at all.

I have it plugged in cig outlet and it stays ON all the time. So when I come back, turn on the 4700 on, I have instant location.

I just love it, have not used the iQue in weeks, but will use it on the bike as soon as the weather get warmer here, maybe in July:mad:

But if you are starting from inside a garage, this won't really help. And while GPS may be instant, but there is a lag in establishing a bluetooth connection. I wonder if some PocketPCs are faster than others in establishing a connection.

I find that a roof-mounted Gilsson will still get the fastest acquisition.

I guess that also holds true for a rooftop antenna. By the time Que starts, being outside, the delay is almost unnoticeable. When the map pops up, so does the location, assuming BT is running.

Let face it we are talking about BT connection, not satellite acquisition.

What I meant by this: "I find that a roof-mounted Gilsson will still get the fastest acquisition" is true coming out of an enclosed garage, which I do when I leave home and work, BT or no BT.

JMckie, I think we are both nitpicking here. Remember, I also can put my BT antenna on the roof.

Since I own both, I will do an unscientific test this weekend and report back.

This what I will do:

Put both antennas on the roof within 12in of each other, the BT antenna off.

Both units on, Que not running.

At the same time I will start Que on both units and the G10. (Come to think of it, I need three hands :p)

I will do this a few time in different location.

What do you think, do you have any other ideas?

I agree about the nitpicking but isn't this typical of our forum. :)

IMO, the test should reflect what happens in real life. I would be very uncomfortable leaving the GPS 10 on the roof. Here's the garage test:

iQue already hooked up to roof-mounted Gillson.

Test 1: Pocket PC already paired to GPS 10 inside the car. There is more than enough time to establish a BT connection by the time the garage door opens.

Drive out of the garage. Which one gets a fix sooner?

Test 2. GPS10 mounted on the roof. (I suspect this would be about the same as the Gilsson)

I've been through the installation CD and I installed the basemap and the Que software. Next thing to do is the CS7 maps and the dreaded sensor configuration program (shudder!).

I tried a basic Bluetooth setup and it seems to 'talk' though I'm inside and have not tried a satellite lock-on. The GPS 10 changed from a rapid blink to a once-per-second or so. Does that suggest I am now paired to it?

Enter the Que app. Select the menu, GPS Info. If it says "Aquiring Satalites" you're hooked up. If it says "No GPS connected" you're not. If I remeber correctly, the first time it may need to search com ports to find the GPS signal. I think it may have taken a couple of tries, but it wasn't a big deal.

Look at your Bluetooth configuration page (not sure where it is one your iPaq). If you see the GPS 10 in there even when you are not connected, then you have successfully paired them.

Gentlemen, it seems it was successfully paired as I entered the 1234 pair code and I definitely got the acquiring satellites display, though as I said, I am indoors.

I'm really impressed with the size of this puppy. It's weight is negligible. It'll be interesting to see how the sats hook up compared to the cfQue I used before. I think I see some questions brewing!

Bokkie, now we have to figure out on how to extend the battery life of the G10, so when I come back to Europe again next year I will have a record of all the places that I have walked through.

But then again, I had it in my car without being plugged in for about six hours before I noticed it and it was still working.
Go figure.

I experimented a lot with all snsrcfg settings and found out that turning WAAS off saves quite some energy. The power-save option doesn't seem to do anything as it is not stored into the gps 10. I asked Garmin about this two weeks ago but they don't answer my questions !?

With WAAS turned off my gps 10 works 18 hours in Garmin-mode!

In that case, who needs a backup battery.:p
