How to charge Axim X50v in the car?

I got the Boxwave USB mini-sync cable and the Boxwave car adapter today. I tried it out in the car today. To my surprise the Axim wasn't charging at all - the battery level kept dropping.

I turned it off and the charging light went on. Apparently it will only charge when the unit is not being used!

How am supposed to use this for GPS navigation in the car? Should I return one or both. And what should I get instead?

Will it be easier to use power inverter like this

and use regular power adapter that you always use.
