I have a trial download of Opera 5.14 (36) on my Netbook and have just noticed on my MAKO CD I have a "free" older version of Opera 3.18 (release 1.01).
Given that these are some version numbers apart I assume there's a significant amount better on the new version than the old. Could anyone summarise what the differences might be please. I notice that Opera still offers 3.0 for download.
I was wondering whether the older "free" version I have would work well enough for most things on my Netbook (I need to start saving for my 2nd Netbook and $29 is a start!:D).
Many thanks in anticipation.

Calbrit. As you have a netbook, download and install the latest OS (158) which contains Opera 5.14, free as the default browser.

Aaah Grant. Before you fly over and punch me, just noticed your other thread about not being able to install the new OS. mmm
Right then differences between 5.14 & 3.62. Now I haven't used 3.62 in a long time. It is difficult to remember when certain functionality was added.
Version 5 was a complete re-write. I think that 3.62 did not have full multiple window functionality. If I also remember rightly, things such as being able to disconnect from the internet within the app did not work either, so you had to launch email or the like to allow ctrl+U to work.
Apart from that, I am going to have to leave this one for the experts to answer.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but I keep both installed. I use 3.62 if I want decent picture quality, and 5.14 if I need multiple windows. Too bad at this point we can't have both.
I also like to occasionally use Opera as a file browser, I've found one can look at the contents of many types of files. However, 5.14 will not let you browse in the System folder, 3.62 will. Not really a big deal, I just happen to like poking around system files to see what they contain.
I've also just noticed that 5.14 has more cookie options.

Well this is academic as I have uninstalled the trial and installed the PSIwin disk older version for the MAKO but it doesn't want to play. It says it's "not enabled for this machine"
Oh well $29 it is for the download!

And yes, it was the Mako version that I tried, and not the Revo one, as I wrongly stated in a previous post. No idea whether that makes any difference, although I suspect it could, since others seem to have installed the Revo version without problem.

Maybe my Netbook is not so unusual after all, apart from the current stalemate on the OS upgrade (Turbo's having a look at it - I sent him the image file today - my first FTP!!). Also arrived today was Gold card - At last, I'm in business!

Hi Grant,
Can you confirm what Gold Card you have for your netbook. A couple of us have been having problems with the CombineIT card (56k & 10/100 LAN). Initially it was thought to be a hardware problem, in that earlier CombineIT cards a hardware upgrade (by Psion) was required. If not performed, they would cause the machine to triple beep reset. Both of our cards have now been upgraded but still getting occasional TBR's. As you have a slightly different operating system, it would be interesting to find out if you experience them too?
Kind Regards

The standard 56k+fax one. I have now used it a fair bit in the last few days and have had no problems at all.

I upgraded my 7 to a 7book (netbook personality module). When it was a 7 it was quite happy with my Psion Dacom 56k + Fax and it worked a dream without problems. After upgrading to 7 book I installed the latest release of the netbook OS (no I am not boasting). I also upgraded the card to a Psion Combine IT LAN&Modem card as it was now supported too.
After a couple of days, I started suffering from triple beep resets. The CombineIT card worked ok on both modem and LAN. Diem confirmed that it was probably caused by the CombineIT card which needed a hardware fix to make it fully netbook compatible.
I had this done (by Psion) and in the meantime used my old Psion Dacom 56k card. To my surprise the TBR's continued although not so often. I have no got my fixed/upgraded CombineIT card back I am still getting the TBR's at the same rate as when the 56k modem was installed. These only now occur when I have a Psion PC Card inserted. If remove either card I get no TBR's.
In view of the fact that at least one of the cards worked ok with my 7, I can now only assume that it is a problem with either the latest OS or the netbook upgrade. I have since heard from another netbook owner who has had similar problems with a CombineIT card even after the card hardware fix. This hopefully rules out the netbook personality module I installed.
What will be of interest is, if you ever manage to get your OS upgraded to build 158, can you insert your Psion Dacom/WAN 56k modem card and try and use your machine as much as possible with it in. Don't worry about having to use it though as it will work perfectly well. The TBR's usually occurs when the card isn't being used (i.e. Not Connected).
Anyway, hope you manage to get your OS upgraded eventually, although judging by this email, I doubt you will bother now !!! lol
Kind Regards

Not sure this helps. I use a Standard gold Card 56k + Fax with the new OS alot for some time now and never had a tripple beep. Interesting that your old goldcard worked in the standard 7 OK but not in the netbook upgrade after you inserted the IT card. Did you try the old card in the new OS before using the combineIT card? (Wild guessing here as to what I might try not being technical, but how about a hard reset reload new OS and try the old card to see if it works, Or how about putting the old 7 module back in and seeing if the old card works again as it used to - sorry if I am stating the stupid or you have tried these, no "teaching grandmother to suck eggs" intended.)

Exactly, what kind of personality is being supplied?!
For the time being I'm ignoring the upgrade issue. To be honest I would rather save the money towards getting another Netbook as a back up while these low cost stocks last. Mine's fine as is!
I think the personality module may cost about a third of what the current EBAY Netbooks are selling for!

The personality module was identical to the module fitted to the netbook (right hand slot under the screen, at the back of the keyboard). Some even thought that they cam from the same supplier as those sent to Psion or that they came from Psion!! Only rumours though.
Expansys were selling them for £65.00 incl VAT (tax) but since demand was so great they have now increased the price to £90 approx. Only problem is that these have now been discontinued so that option is not available now anyway.
Looks like the only other thing to do is find a way of changing the type of OS you units are looking for. I would imagine that this info is stored on the eprom on the actual Motherboard which is upgradable but I assume only Psion would have this. May be worth while sending an email to support at Psion Techlogix?
