I needed a palm of some kind with a color screen to put a medical program on for my ill wife. A friend heard about it and gave me his Palm IIIc complete with all accessories. It was working perfect. I followed instructions and set it in the charging base and plugged it in and light came on on the top of the Palm IIIc. About a half hour later I noticed the light was off and I went to unplug it and found the adapter so hot it was close to melting. The back of the Palm IIIc was also very hot. Now it will no longer turn on. Neither the instructions or the Palm site state the correct output voltage of the adapter. After seaching this FAQ I found responses that stated the adapter is 5v. Is this true? The adapter he furnished is a 9 volt output. Is there any hope of salvaging this Palm IIIc? How do I attempt repair? Would a new batter possibly fix it or is the whole Palm fried? I am really sick over this because my wife really needed it and we cannot afford a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

though it is surtenly possible you fried something destroying the whole palm shouldn't be possible. as far as i know the charging part of the IIIc is located on top of the li-ion battery and should protect it from overcharging and such things. so ther is a probabiliy you wrecked something, but probably not the whole device. If i were you i'd try to find out what's wrong and replace tha part (if it isn't to pricy)

The circuitry inside is not designed for 9V. If the battery was hot, the protection circuit was fried, too.

Perhaps look on E-bay. Your friend gave you the wrong adapter.

Yes, look on ebay, and if you thinkyou can put it together from parts, just buy a broken on from there and salvage. A broken screen would be best, but most broken IIIcs should have the part you need. Otherwise, try ********hightech.com. Cheers
