In doing some searches here on the forums, I suspect that what fried my Betty was not AvantGo (see that thread), but that I had some power surges in my car which fried the car mount/charger. I do recall that before the first one quit working, it started loosing the satellite signals while I was driving with a gradually higher and higher frequency, so that unit went bad slowly. The second unit went bad instantly after putting it in the car charger just once, so it's got to be the car mount. So, I think I need a surge protector for my car.

I've seen some references to 12V surge protectors here in the forum, but I can't find any on MobilePlanet or any other web store. Can someone post a link, please?

And while someone's posting a link, I've also seen references to a Glisson (or is it Gilson) external antenna that's apparantly quite small. Again, I can't find it in any web store, so could someone post a link for that, too, please?

Thanks,
Christina

For an antenna, look for the Gilsson antenna at www.gpsgeek.com (or their dealerlist). Another good antenna is the Wi-sys 3910 from www.wisys.com

It could either be a surge from the vehicle, when cranking the motor, or a spark due to static electricity from car seats etc. I've had one iQWue fried that way. I try to avoid having the iQue connected to car power when I start.

There is a 12 volt surge protection circuit which has been mentioned on this forum many months ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the link at hand.

Here's the Gilsson link. It's their Yahoo store (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/gilsson/antennas.html) .
