Connection btwn. Serial & Desktop Problemo!

I am running Palm 4.0.1 on my iBook with Mac OS 9.2

My Palm V cannot be recognized. The error reads:
"The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

I am using a serial adapter to a printer Epson (Stylus 740 printer), which then connects via USB to my iBook.

Anyone have some help for me?

Are you saying that you have chained the Palm, Printer and Laptop? So That after the Printer, connected to the laptop by USB, receives the signal it sends the signal to the Palm by Serial....can that be right?
Just how smart can the USB port be? Isn't the USB reading the Printer as it installed hardware? Why would it pass along data to the Palm? This time of year brings thoughts of Christmas tree lights...they come chained in parallel and series. That’s a no brainer for the light bulbs all they want is power. Your Palm wants its very own data bits not the printer's.
If you can make this work, I would be surprised but very happy for you.
