Programming my own software

I would like to create my own application for my Zire 72, but I am totally not a geek ;), so I don't know where to start.
What kind of programming language do I need to learn? Is there software I should get to help me? Are there other questions I should ask... :)

you can begin with C or java

both are very popular but is a long path to follow until you can make a application working. ita is not easy.
