DANGERMOUSE

I've got an m500 and am trying to link to my new laptop via the IR function. I have enabled IR to PC on both my palm and the PC.
When I put the palm next to the laptop's IR port Windows recognises it and says 'There is another computer nearby. Click here to send files to this computer.' Fine. I have managed to beam software to my palm using the Windows XP program but what I cannot do is perform a full hotsync. Whenever I try my palm displays 'Unable to initiate hotsync operation because the port is in use by another application.'
I'm guessing that the automatic detection is causing this conflict but I could be wrong. What am I missing here?!?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
