It's been awhile since I've been here but I'm would like to know if the new Sprint Smartphone ( I quess it's by audiovox) PPC-6600 will function as a wireless modem on the Sprint network with a laptop? The capability is probably there much like the Treo 600 and Treo 650. This capability is not completely built into the Treo so you have to use a third party program gain this function.

Yes, it can act as wireless modem allows you to use the phone as a modem for desktop or laptop over Bluetooth, IR, Serial or USB. You do not need 3rd party software. You may have to activate particular option with your Sprint account first depending on your service. They should have cable available as well. Or you can get bluetooth dongle for your laptop.

Thank you for that info AnswerDude, but I'm just a little confused about your response because Sprint has been know to have the wireless modem function disabled on their phones. As of date, the only Sprint phone that could function like this out of the box was the Samsung I330. Sprint does not like customers to use their phones this way but I've been doing it for 5 years and they don't seem to care. I've think about switching to Sprint's PC phone because it has much more memory than my Treo 650.

Audiovox ppc-6600 is capable of being a wireless modem for the desktop, it comes with WModem You can purchase cable such as this one (or bluetooth) to do so.

Whether Sprint choose not to include WModem program on thier unit, i'm not sure. You can always get unlock phone from other source, or this article may help;

AnswerDude:
I did buy the Audiovox and think it's a fine phone. It does come with the Wmodem program that you talked about but I couldn't get it to connect to my desktop computer as a modem through the USB cradle. Activesync works just fine though. It connects to all my computers through its bluetooth and I don't use Ymodem! I set up a bluetooth connection in windows and the phone does the rest. Perhaps Sprint had Audiovox disable the modem fuction when connect it to computers by a usb cable. They forgot or chose to disable the bluetooth modem function if they disabled anything at all!

To make this phone as a USB modem you need to install the drivers for the same .
Drivers are available by some third party .
Still searching for that as soon as i find will give you

Npatang, thank you for your response. Sprint may or may not be responsible for disabling the phone's modem function through the cradle/usb cable because PalmOne has a Treo 650 software update that's suppose to built the modem function into the phone. No more need for PDANet to use the Treo 650 as a modem! I would think that PalmOne would have had to get Sprint's Ok on the Treo update.
