Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Very slow operation
I haven't used my netBook for some time and the batteries run right out. Now when trying to use it it is very very slow in opening up programs. Anyone else had this problem? Just before the batteries did go I noticed then that it was very slow.

In reply to my own thread: I removed the buffalo wifi card and everything is fine, put it back in again and slooooooow again. Anyone know why?

My Series7 would occasionally run really slowly, requiring a soft reset to fix it. But I always figured that it was the fault of the code for slowing down the CPU (since the Series7 & Netbook CPUs really run at the same speed).
I haven't notice the problem since upgrade to a Netbook.

Hi Chris!
As 7Book owner i have to say, there is a large speed difference between Series 7 and 7Book/netBook. Only the CPU and the board are the same, but somehow braked down by waitstaites, no-ops whatsoever in the boot ROM (a lot of possibilites given by ARMs machine code) to 'reach' the slower speed. Tested it with Citymaps!
Maybe the original problem has to do with the IP stack - is the IP update installed?

The thing is I have the buffalo card for some time (12mths+) without it running slow.

I think it is more likely down to ROM vs RAM access times. ROM is much slower to access than RAM meaning the S7 would be slower by design.

That may have been something which Psion made use of, but I'm pretty sure that the original reason was so that they could justify selling Netbooks at extortionate prices to companies, while selling the Series7 to consumers at rather cheaper prices.
BTW, as Mobilix mentioned, connecting an (unpatched) Psion to the internet can cause it to run really slowly, due uninitiated connect attempts by some popular Windows worms. (Broadband users don't usually have to worry about this.)

Yup, try the Sink2 program, and check your PCs for infection - unsecured WiFi is a horrendous way for malicious code to spread!

Lenb,
do you have a chance of testing the suspected card with another netBook -- or another compatible wifi card with your own machine? This may help to determine, whether the problem is card related or machine related.

One of my Buffalo cards had worked well for several days before it started to misbehave. (Once I bought two of these, the other unit is still OK.) I've got in touch with the manufacturer's support, and was told to send the defunct card back via the retailer for replacement/repair. (Still waiting for the unit to return, by the way.)
Best wishes
Marek

With regard to TCP/IP stack vulnerability I agree with Chris. As long as your netBook is behind a router (typical local network using private addressing), it is the router's job to drop the nasty IP packets.
