I have surfed the web for this problem and there doesn't appear to be a solution to it. A lot of people seem to have this problem. (Windows Mobile 2003)
Just purely using the PPC no synching so don't relate this to Outlook PC in anyway please, at all nothing to do with it.
Here we go:
In the PPC contacts program > the dropdown will show you a list of some of the categories, clicking [more] will show you them all. > If you create a contact that uses that category the dropdown will filter on all contacts relating to that category, correct. However if you delete all the contacts that uses that category the dropdown no longer shows that category as available, correct. > Then go ahead and delete that category. > That category is now gone > However if you delete the category with at least one contact assigned to it the [more] selection will show that category as "not in category list", correct. > Deleting any contacts using that category will eventually remove that category from the [more] list, correct.
Now the bug:
If you change the category of all contacts to another category so that a category now has no contacts assigned to it, the dropdown still shows that category, wrong. And if you filter on it no contacts show up. > Now go ahead and delete that category. > That category will remain in the dropdown and if you select [more] it will say next to it "not in category list", wrong, as there is nothing else assigned to it. It should only say that if there are at least one contact associated with it.
So the bug is the category remains in the dropdown and in the [more] categories list as "not in category list". You cannot delete it as it says you have already deleted it, ie not in the list to delete.
This problem happens when you change/disassociate contacts from an unwanted category Windows Mobile somehow residually thinks there exists contacts with that category an orphaned reference or something in the database (I'm a professional software developer/tester btw).
Example scenario go and try before giving me a naive fix as I am sick of the answers given on other crappy forums:
* Create a category called "atest"
* Create a contact called "atestcontact", assign him to category "atest"
* Create a category called "atest2"
* Edit the contact "atestcontact" > unassign him from "atest" and assign him to "atest2"
* Delete the category "atest"
* You will find that category "atest" remains in the dropdown and in the [more] categories section it will say "atest (not in category list)"
Let me know if you have the same problem.
