I was driving downtown the other day and because of the combination of missed turns and poor reception, I had a number of "off-route, recalculating" situations.

I have found recalculation to be very slow compared to what I am used to on the iQue 3600, even when the signal was strong. Two times the Axim simply froze up during recalc, which forced me to stop by the side of the road and do a pin reset. This is two times too many.

Do you guys have the same problem?

I have found some confirmation of this problem in Dale de Priest's M5 review (http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/M5.htm)

One new thing I was using was at BT headset to listen to the voice prompts. Simultaneous use of two BT devices - GPS and headset - works nicely by the way. One day just to push the envelope I will try three devices by connecting to the internet using a BT cell phone at the same time.

I find the M5 annoyingly slow sometimes as well, particularly when acquiring satellites for the first time after being given a route to calculate. I've had to reset it once or twice because it got stuck in this state. It definitely feels a lot slower than the 3600, even as regards map zooming and panning. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, though.

Then again, PPC's in general seem to be annoyingly slow. You can almost hear them frantically swapping to disk sometimes (if they had disks, that is...). All the ones I have tried are pretty unresponsive for at least 15 seconds after being powered on.

I too find it irritatingly slow when it does an "off route...". I don't have any significant sat acq problems. Generally my app switching on the HX4700 is fast and responsive enough and I wonder if Mobile 5.0 will make any difference as I have that as an upgrade option later on this year when HP release the downloads.

I can also confirm that the recalc is inferiorly slow.
My wife would probably find a new rout faster. ;)

I've also noticed that the map position is not updated as well as in the iQue 3600.
When approaching, lets say a x-ing, the que says its still 20m to go before I'm there, when I'm actually already there.

Well this is something to remember. Bokkie actually saying something is irritating to him regarding his HP and the PPC/Garmin OS??????!!!!!!

Goodness, I need to link that comment to the Ique 3600 forum!!

Bokkie, all kidding aside, you think the mobile upgrade might improve that? From what I understand, a limited number of current PPC's will accept that upgrade. Am I correct on that?

I'll chime in on this one. WM 2005 isn't likely to improve that situation. Garmin needs to fix the program.

All of the major manufacturers have announced plans to release upgrades to WM2005, at least for the recent models.

I'll further that and suggest that the Que app may not function at all on Mobile 5.

ugh, i hope you are wrong abou that one, or that Garmin updates it for us.

I wouldn't want to upgrade so soon to another GPS10 sibling just 'cause the software didn't work!

The slowness would seem to be a Que software issue, not hardware. iGuidance's re-routing is much faster on the Axim than Que's on the iQue.

Its true,
I ve been torque testing the StreetPilot C330 and M5 (both garmins) and The c330 has never failed to impress , it hate its form factor though , the M5 is incedibly slow compared to the c330.
Its lost its signal a few times, reconnection also took a while, and when it did it was all zoomed out, all this while the c330 stayed on course.

So I'm not at all happy with the M5's reliability. Kinda like the 1st gen camera fones (Anyone whos used a sony ericcsson t68i will know what Im talking about) that let you do a ton of gimmicky stuff but actually suck at being a fone.

Im giving it the boot and keeping the c330.
