What's the difference between using Mapsource or the Palm Desktop for loading maps on the ique? They both seem to use the same source information, and the results seem the same.

Mapsource is, according to my opinion, a bit easier to use.
Besides, Mapsource can do a lot of other things too, including preparing waypoints for transfer to the iQue, as well as inspecting tracks, previously recorded on the iQue.

My preference for Mapsource is perhaps based on the fact, that I had used it for several years prior to acquiring the iQue, but then with other Garmin GPS units.

But you are right about the maps. They both give (or should at least give) the same final result.

The most important difference for me between Map Install on the Palm Desktop versus Mapsource is that if you have an SD card reader you can ask Mapsource to load the maps directly to the card in the reader instead of setting it for hotsync. This is MUCH faster than hotsyncing the maps over to the iQue. The difference is significant enough that I bought an SD card reader for just that purpose (they're cheap as dirt).

As Anders said, there are other things you can do with Mapsource that may or may not interest you. It has all the functionality of the iQue's map functions and maybe a bit more. I find it easier to use for pre-trip planning than the little screen on the iQue.

It's been brought to my attention that Mapinstall can install directly to a card as well. I too thought something else, a while ago.

My goodness, you're right, Anders. I just checked and Map Install does indeed have a selection for my card reader. How did I miss that?

I still prefer Mapsource for most stuff when I'm at my computer, but at least now I know I can install straight to the card from Map Install instead of having to hotsync new map packages to the iQue.

You probably did the same as I did, to begin with, i.e. put up an arrogant attitude, saying "I don't have to look, I know it all anyway".
