I did something stupid and loaded incompatible software on my new IPAQ 3950 and now it won't boot up or even power off. I'm just going to exchange it where I bought it, but I was curious to see if there is a way to reload the OS. The device is not connecting to the desktop manager. A hard reset does not work either. Any ideas?

Hi, first off have you tried a soft reset? Have you tried a hard reset? The OS is in ROM and any software you load other than the OS upgrades from Compqa cannot touch your OS so it dose not have to be reloaded as it hasn't been changed. Which piece of software did you load. Try the soft then hard reset first as the store you bring it back to may charge you a restocking fee for a perfectly fine unit.....or they may laugh wildly at you for not having read the manual first.
Hope this helps
Good luck

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. When you say a soft reset do you mean power off then on? The device won't power off any more. When I hit the reset button on the bottom of the IPAQ it resets to the Compaq Ipaq screen and stays there. I've even drained the battery and charged it again and it gets stuck on the same bootup screen. I loaded JSLandscape software which I knew probably would not be compatible (originally bought for my 3650) on my 3950. I figured I could just remove the software if it did not work. Well....I learned something new! If you have any ideas ....I'll try it. Thanks,

Hi, ok the little hole at the bottom when pushed will perform a soft reset. Check you manual as to how to hard reset a 3900 series. This will reset it to factory defaults. I think it involves holding the power button and pushing the reset hole at the bottom. Try this and if it fails you may have no choice but to return it.
Thanks
