I can see this question coming up quite a bit, so here's a seperate thread for it.

1) DVD drives are cheap, you can get a DVD reader for $30, or a DVD writer for $50. Don't want to fool around with installing a DVD drive, you can get an external DVD writer for $100. Time for an upgrade!!

2) Do you know someone with a DVD burner? If so, have them read the DVD in their computer, use a program that can compress the files into an image and can do disk spanning, there are probably hundreds of such programs, a quick search turned up a free program called TUGZip (http://www.tugzip.com/). Use the program to create CD sized chunks, have them burn them to CD's for you (DVD burners can also burn CD's). Load the chunks on your computer and with the program your friend used above uncompress the files to your computer and then install.

3) If you and a friend have broadband connections, and the friend has a DVD reader, have them read the DVD and send you the files.

4) Do you have a friend with a DVD reader and external hard drive? Have them copy the DVD to the external hard drive and then bring the drive over to you, hook it up to your computer and then install.

5) Do you have another computer like a MAC with a DVD drive on a home network? Use that machine to read the DVD and then transfer the files to the PC and install.

etc.

Thanks Rich,

These are excellent suggestions for anyone in this situation.

5.a) Share the DVD on the Mac (or whatever) using Samba (Windows share) and install from there. No transfering needed, just install. Notebooks are handy for this.

But you have to wonder, how many people without DVD drives have home networks already set up?
