JohnKes 11-25-2002, 04:31 PM Depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. If you want to do AvantGo and Mapopolis, great. If you want to put in family photos, not so great - the m130 had a 12-bit color screen. You need at least 16-bits (65,000 colors) for good looking pics. For 16-bit color without paying a bunch, you can go m505, m515, Sony SJ30 or T675, Handspring Prism PDA_UK 11-25-2002, 04:53 PM hmmm, I dont rely know, I have a color Pocket PC, that dose ok for photos and it has a flash slot so i can take them straght from my didicam. I just like the idea of all that memory and color. Thanx for your help slowly_learning 11-25-2002, 10:28 PM I've had a couple of M130's, and they've worked great for me. Photos and everything. P.S. The M505 doesn't have a 16-bit screen... JohnKes 11-26-2002, 12:02 AM The m505 DOES have a 16-bit screen, it is just dim. Notice that Palm indicates that it supports 65,000 colors. http://www.palm.com/support/m505/m505_faq.html#geninfo The m130, on the other hand supports "thousands" of colors (4096, 12-bit): http://www.palm.com/products/palmm130/ tuffguy 11-26-2002, 09:45 AM PDA_UK, When you started this thread you said "should I upgrade from a m100 to a m130." You were told yes, this is a good upgrade. Then, you say..."Well, my ppc is better than a m130." Well, which one is it? Do you even have a pda? If your question was pda vs. ppc, then you should ask that! If your question is pda vs. pda, then ask that. I have an m130. I love it. The color display is nice. No, it can't compare with the m515 or the Tungsten, but I didn't pay Tungsten prices for it either. Considering it is my first pda, I think I did pretty good choosing. Is my m130 better than a new ipaq? No way! If I had money to burn I would get one of those in a heartbeat. Or maybe a new Tungsten, or a new clie, or a new..... The point is, for the most part, the more money you spend, the better equipment you get. No, this is not always the case, so you don't have to argue with me about the deal you got. If you want good prices, check ebay. tuff P.S. My 130 hasn't blown my house up yet, but I'm still waiting. JohnKes 11-26-2002, 10:36 AM PDA_UK, We still don't know if we answered your question. Were you thinking of using your Palm PDA to: 1) read e-books on a 3 month trek in the Himalayas - go m100 2) play PalmOS games - m130 3) throw your PDA into a bag or the car to have address and schedule info all the time. Kind of a rough, beat it up environment - m100 4) use SD content cards - m130 m130 11-26-2002, 02:02 PM Here is my $0.02 I own the m130 and love to show photos on it. Everyone is impressed, so I don't think the 12-bit vs. 16-bit is a huge issue. The biggest issue is if you can recharge the m130 every couple of days or so. If you can't, you're stuck with the m100 or any other monochrome PDA. The difference in size and weight is negligible (sp?). The m130 is very comfortable and inexpensive for a color pda. The price is even cheaper now that it says it only displays 12-bit. Good luck PDA_UK 11-26-2002, 03:53 PM Thanx to all of you, I have decided to sell my llle and m100 and buy a m130. majormadmax 12-01-2002, 12:29 PM Funny you should ask.... My wife bought me a m100 two years ago as my first PDA. I loved the thing but the 2MB was quickly gone, so I sent it off for a 8MB upgrade. A few months ago it started to hard reset when I changed the batteries, nothing I had was left on it. I figured after all the use I had out of it, it was time for a new one. I found a M105 for €95, so I bought it and used it for about a month. Basically, it was my m100 with the 8MB already done, so there was no difference. Well, about a month later, when the batteries started to wear out, I changed them and it did the same thing my old m100 did...hard reset! So I took it back to the Belgian store where I bought it and they needed to confirm it was busted. So a week later they said it was, and that they would replace it (which would take another week). So I went back and they couldn't get one, and said to come back a week later, and the same thing happened again, finally they told me they couldn't get anymore m105s and refunded my money. Rats, so I was back to using my old m100; until last Friday when I ran into two friends at the US store on Chievres Air Base. They asked if I knew anything about Palms, as they just bought two, so I asked what they got. They said they got M130s for $199 each, as there was a $50 rebate on them. So I grabbed one and have had it for three days now. How does it compare with the m100/m105? Smashing, it is well worth the money for the color display. It came with MGI software so I could load up digital pictures in color, which were 1/20th the size of the black and white pictures I had using FireViewer. They aren't photo-quality, but tey are good enough and just having the color makes them a heck of a lot better. Also, most of the games I have are in color as well, so playing solitare is a lot neater. The m130 also comes with DataViz for MS Office files on your Palm, and Palm Reader (both of which I have yet to load up), as well as an email program (which I already had on my m100) Check out all the programs at:http://www.palm.com/products/palmm130/software.html The m130 is also loads faster, and it is much quicker hot synching it through a USB cable versus a serial one. Downsides? I don't like the m130's cradle, it doesn't seem to be made for it (is it a Palm V cradle?), the connection is more delicate and honestly I don't think it will hold up too well. I had problems with scratching on my old m100, I am not sure how the m130 wil hold up as it seems to be the same plastic screen. I hate screen covers so don't recommend them. The m130 seems study, which is one reason I like it over the m500 series. I worked with a guy who had a color one (m515) and it was hard to see without the backlight on. I noticed the m130 seems to always have a backlight on, not sure how this works but as it has a rechargable battery (another bonus over the m100/105), that doesn't matter much. OK, bttom line...if you get a m130 you will wonder why you ever lived with a monochromatic PDA. It is like going from b&w TV to color, it really opens up your world! Spend the money, it is worth it! Cheers! Maj M2 m130 12-02-2002, 01:20 PM MajorMadMax, Couple of quick things. If you like photos on your m130, try downloading splashphoto. It is a lot faster to access the photos. You will notice that MGI photosuite bogs down after you get a lotg of photos on the palm. As far as the cradle, you're right. It's the same cradle that the mSeries uses. I guess the advantage is that right now when I travel to the US to visit my father, I can recharge my m130 on his m515 cradle! Backlight can be turned off (down). Just hold do the power button for a few seconds. If you have it turned on you get about 4 hours of use. Off you can get about 10 hours of use. Later majormadmax 12-02-2002, 01:43 PM m130 Thanks for the info, the backlight feature is opposite of what it was on my m100. I was wondering why it got darker when I turned it "on", but actually it is only a dimmer switch, because either way the backlight is on. I saw a 32MB SD card for $29.95 where I bought my m130, it looks like it will plug right into the expansion port. I noticed that Palm only sells 16MB ones, is there a limit? I don't think there would be, as storage is storage. It would be nice to have 4x more memory! Cheers! M2 m130 12-02-2002, 01:52 PM not sure about a limit, but I have a 64MB SanDisk SD card and it works like a champ. I put photos (about 200 and counting) on it and ebooks. majormadmax 12-02-2002, 02:02 PM Great! I also saw a 64MB SD card for about $44 (no tax). That is gobs more memory, I may get one as I would love to load up a lot of photos on it. Cheers! M2 JohnKes 12-02-2002, 02:04 PM Check out Amazon and Buy.com They have 64MB for $30-40. You should be able to use at least 128MB. tuffguy 12-03-2002, 09:14 AM I second what John said. From what I have been told, the m130 can't support cards larger than 256 MB due to its operating system (please correct me if I'm wrong). You should have no problem using a card up to and including that size though. I recommend steering clear of Palm brand memory cards. You end up paying too much for the name. My experience is that all memory cards are the same. Get the cheapest you can. tuff. JohnKes 12-03-2002, 11:04 AM There are rumors that SanDisk SD cards don't last very long. I don't even want to know about off-brands. www.buy.com may still have a sale on Viking SD cards. I have a Viking CF card. It is the fastest CF I have ever used. I hope their SD card is just as good. majormadmax 12-03-2002, 12:02 PM Great, I just got home from buying a 64KB SanDisk SD memory card ($44.95), and someone says they think they don't last too long! Seems to be working OK, nice to have 8x more memory on the old m130. I never had a problem managing the 8MB of memory I had with my m100 (with a memory upgrade), now I am sure I will be loading this SD card up with digital pics and whatever else I can think of (books maybe?) Anyone else have any problems with a SanDisk card? At least I have all the files on my computer, so anything that I may lose if it goes Tango Uniform :D won't be completely lost. Cheers! M2 m130 12-03-2002, 12:28 PM My SanDisk card has lasted 6 months and still going strong. Don't fret :) blackvyper 12-03-2002, 02:55 PM I just want to say to all of you guys out there criticizing the m130. Hey.. mine cost me $200 after the rebate and it works just fine. If I wanted all of the added features (improved color, speed, OS 5) then I would have sprung for a $499 Tungsten. The m130 is the best PDA around for the price and quality. I have a 64mb Lexar media card (it cost $53 from Comp USA and it works fine). I have loaded plenty of photos ,games, and other utlities onto it. From time to time I even watch short video clips on it. I can find only one drawback and that is that is has poor sound (no mp3 quality here..lol). Now if someone out there can get me a modem cheaper than $105 then I would be grateful. :D Oh yeah! Anyone know anymore sites I can get freeware from? I have tried: palmgear, palmarchives, freewarepalm and a few others. Palm Cow 12-03-2002, 05:07 PM majormadmax- Just so you know, the m130 uses the Universal Connector, so it has the same cradle as: m500 m505 m515 m125 More to Come! It LOOKS like an Palm V cradle because the Universal Cradle was first for the m500, which looks like the Palm V. JohnKes 12-03-2002, 05:38 PM majormadmax, I used to think SanDisk was the best. Maybe they put out a bad batch. I hope you got a good one. blackvyper, I agree, an m130 is pretty good for $200. You can look around www.eurocool.com They have a mix of shareware and freeware. They have ratings too, so you won't waste time installing lameware. palmTree 12-07-2002, 11:01 AM How long can you expect to have the rechargeable battery before it needs replacing, had an Ipaq and after a year they go down from 10 hours to 2 hours on a full charge. CClyph 12-07-2002, 05:35 PM In Palm's defense, even though they are screwing me out of the Simcity game, the M130 does produce approximately 16-bit color. According to the website (http://www.palm.com/support/m130program/m130program.html) it makes 58,621 color combinations. True 16-bit color would be 2^16 (2 to the 16th power) or 65,536. Manufacturers usually just say "over 65000 colors" because only geeks like me know or care what the exact number is. The next approximation down would be 15-bit color, 2^15 (2 to the 15th power) or 32,768. The actual amount that the M130 produces (58,621) comes much closer to 65,536 than 32,768. If you want to be exact, the M130 produces 2^15.83913 color combinations, or 15.83913-bit color. When dealing with figures that high, most people cannot tell the difference anyway. This is way above the 12-bit (4096 colors) that someone mentioned before. Palm Cow 12-07-2002, 06:11 PM From www.the-gadgeteer.com review of the Palm m130: It comes with a color transflective 12 bit screen (4096 simultaneous colors / 58,621 dithered colors) Maybe this will cool your arguments? Thank you, Gadgeteers! majormadmax 12-08-2002, 03:23 AM Folks The more I play with my new m130, the more I like it! The best part is realizing which games were actually in color, such as Acura golf (which is great but I could never play golf that well!) and PalmaSutra (for adults only!). I tried SplashPhoto through their trial offer and decided I will stick with PhotoSuite. SplashPhoto trimmed my pictures down and as some of them aren't centered in on the subject, they are now cropped. Plus, you can't zoom in. It did seem to run fast than PhotoSuite but as I just bought a 64MB SD card I can load up bigger pics and think it is worth the wait to have the capabilities of PhotoSuite. For a buck under $200, the m130 is probably the best PDA deal going right now! Cheers! M2 majormadmax 12-08-2002, 03:30 AM I noticed in the m130 review (Gadgeteer m130 Review) (http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/m130-review.html) that the notepad example is in color! I am also running v1.7 but it is liekly left over from my m100 days. Can I download the color version of notepad from somewhere??? Cheers! M2 majormadmax 12-09-2002, 03:29 AM If I could share a lesson learned for those of you who may follow in my footsteps and replace an old m100 or m105 with a m125 or m130... I am slowly learning that I needed to upgrade some of my more memory-intensive applications, such as Mapopolis and iSilo Free (a doc reader) to work with the memory card. The versions I had were created before expansion ports were common, therefore they had no capability to access data on them. This was a point of frustration as I wondered how I could access a 1.2MB map off my SC card, until a small light over my head changed me from  to :D After visiting the websites for the two apps I named above, I found that both had updated versions of their programs that would allow for files to be accessed off the expansion card. Needless to say I am busy uploading the new apps as well as a ton of files that I could never keep on my Palm due to the 8MB limitation. How I ever survived with only 2MB I will never know! I hope this keeps some of you from learning the hard way, as I did. Of course I could have asked on this forum, but much like asking for directions, sometimes we men prefer to do things our way. It's a guy thing... Cheers! M2 blackvyper 12-09-2002, 08:42 AM Majormadmax Splash Photo is a good program but I bored of it too easily and Photosuite was something I used because it came with my m130, but the amount of space a pic used was atrocious. If you want a good program for viewing pics try Acid Image. You can zoom in, zoom out and do other things. It looks like a mini photo album and you can .. I stress.. can have 20 thumbnail photos on the screen at once. I got mine the easy way :D .. but it's worth the $20. CClyph I thought I was the only one Palm was beating out of the Sim City game. To be honest I could care less about a few colors that are missing from the m130 . No one can tell the difference anyway. It's just the principle behind the whole thing. They promised a refund or a Sim City game and I love my Palm too much to see it go. I think they never had any intentions of giving away that download. It was just to shut people up for a while. I called and emailed but could never get them to give me the download, and when I finally was able to do so they sent me a link to the game but when i went there it said that the offer was over. I took that to mean that there never was one in Palm's eyes. I already have the SD card, 2 cases and over $400 in software on my m130.. do you really think I am gonna sent it back now...lol :D Palm did us wrong but they made a good product. My indoctrination is now complete...lol. CClyph 12-09-2002, 09:45 AM Everyone that got screwed out of the Simcity game, see my thread "Anyone receive their free Simcity game for the M130?" (http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=6908) If Palm pulled one over on you like they did to me and the others in that thread, speak up and join in. Looks like Palm took the easy way out. After lying about the M130's color capabilities, they are trying to make up for it with another lie. Both the Simcity game and full refund were complete public relations ploys. That made the general public say "Aww, Palm has such great business practice. They are making up for their mistake like ethical professionals should." I have yet to hear from anyone that actually got the Simcity game or a full refund. jarsports 12-09-2002, 08:48 PM Why not just buy a sony clie sj30. With 2 times the memory and 2 times the screen resolution isn't it all around better. I mean I think the sj30 has all the other same basic stuff as the m130 does so to me its a better deal. Palm Cow 12-09-2002, 09:38 PM I do belive that the SJ30 has 4 times the resolution. A 160*320 would be twice the res., 320*320 is four times. All the better, though. I've seen them for around $250. None of your peripherals for your m10x, because the m130 and SJ30 have different connectors (the m10x have the III(__) connector), so either way would work. I do like the SJ30 more, but I am biased (against the m1xx series), don't kill me! blackvyper 12-10-2002, 10:16 AM I wouldnt trade my m130 for a Sony Clie sj30 any day of the week. Besides the fact that it feels frail when I pick it up; the buttons are really too close together for regular use. Imagine trying to play a game where you have to push the buttons to play. Dont get me wrong now. The sj30 has nice resolution, it's nice to look at and it is reasonable priced, but I love the styling and solid feel of my m130 and as long as she lights up when I push the power on I will never need a replacement. Is the sj30 capable of supporting a modem? m130 12-10-2002, 10:42 AM I think one of the biggest things going for the m130 or and mseries is the universal adapter. There are tons of accessories and they fit all of the m models. So if I upgrade to a m515 all of my accessories come with it :) PDA Street
