Hello. After not using my device for a few months, I turned it on only to find that all the applications I'd installed on it (keyboard, etc.) had been erased. Furthermore, it will no longer hotsync. I tried soft resetting it, but this didn't improve the situation. What, in your opinions, is the cause of this problem? Thank you.

Does it charge (and then hold the charge reasonably well)? If so, try an actual hard reset and HotSync. Sometimes, the data loss caused by a dead battery doesn't quite delete everything.

I tried that - still doesn't work. Should I just let the battery die?

Do the computer or handheld do anything at all when you try to HotSync ("bleebleeblee" tone from the handheld, HotSync screen popping up on the computer) or do they just sit there like nothing is happening? Another thing to check is the contacts on the sync cradle and on the handheld. Make sure they're clean.
You could try letting the battery die, but it seems that's what put the Palm in this state of sorrow to begin with.

I had exactly the same issue. I found an article on palmone about "developers Backdoor" and it fixed my 515 which wouldn't sync by cable for over two years.
Put the 515 in the cradle
Launch the Hot Sync
While it is attempting to connect, hold the "UP" arrow (upper silver button) and tap the top right hand corner of the screen.
The developers backdoor will disable the time out function and my 515 synced right away. I am still on OS4.0 and the sync has worked every time since I did this.
The real article is here:<<http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=39,E=0000000000131612964,K=8315,Sxi=3,useTempl ate=Case.tem,CASE=5563>>
or google "developers backdoor palm"
