Hi, I have a series 7 which I've put the netbook OS onto.
My uni has wireless internet which requires a VPN password to access - is there a way of doing this on my Psion? (I'm not holding out much hope, since no-one I've spoken to in the IT dept has ever heard of Psion, never mind been able to answer my question.)
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi, I don't think it's possible because the Netbook or 7Book doesn't support VPN. You can surf with WPA and WEP security but NO VPN :-(
If you will, you can search for an open connection near by or use GPRS with a phone or PCMCIA card.

The only possiblity I can think of is a Java program for handling VPN, but most probably that's a no-go.

Thanks, guys. I'm not surprised, but it's a bit disappointing.

Sarah - I am a fellow sufferer. My university also requires a VPN for wi-fi access - which is especially frustrating in the Library. The IT desk had heard of EPOC but cold find no software for it. I've given up. Do please say if you find a remedy.
I don't know if you have any reason to use the British Library, but I fear that something similar is a problem there. Last year I spent some time with the providers of the BL's wi-fi system but between us we could not complete a connection (mBook with Cisco card) because of some problem with multiple windows. That was the fault of Opera I think, but when I return I'll try again with the Buffalo card and 7Book. Alas however, I suspect that we Psion lovers must suffer the penalties of slightly out-of-date software etc.

Have a look at this PsionPlace thread "VPN or GoToMYPc on a netBook"
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29547
There are hints on the internet, for example
http://www.appgate.com/news_and_publications/20_Press_Releases/n030114.php
"Psion Teklogix (LSE: PON), a global leader in rugged mobile computing devices and wireless LAN systems implementation and support, today announced that both the netpad and netBook mobile devices now support , the Java-based VPN solution by IT-security provider AppGate Network Security AB."
but I couldn't find anything else on the website.
Eric Lindsay says
** MindTerm **
AppGate pure Java 1.1.x based SSH client opens secure tunnels to SSH servers for VPN. (Do some snooping on sites to locate this.) www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/CD/current/EPOC/instructions/ and www.applegate.org/mindterm/ "
and...
http://www.************.com/p/articles/mi_m0IGV/is_3_3/ai_72296460
"The partnership will accelerate Certicom's support of the Symbian platform with its Handheld VPN client so that users of Symbian-based Smartphones and Communicators will now have secure access to corporate intranets."
but the information on Certicom's website indicate support for Windows CE.

Colin
Thanks very much for your info. I'll pass it on to our IT people so that, with luck (!), they might chase up something to put on the server and perhaps something for my Psion. I'm not going to hold my breath though, as they don't seem to be very interested in anything unusual.
