My PC laptop is reaching the end of its life and I'm seriously considering an iBook as a replacement. But since my Psion is actually more important to me than the "main" computer, I want to know whether there are any issues with using a Mac instead of a Windows PC.

All advice welcome (in simple language, as ever, please, due to my extreme technical ignorance).

Cheers,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

This site seems to be a pretty good resource on the subject: http://www-np.unimaas.nl/maas/s5/.

Best regards,
Martin

Sarah - I think you have a 7Book (if I'm remembering correctly from another thread). In any case much the same applies.

There are no significant issues even though Psion was amazingly inconsiderate of the Mac when it comes to connectivity. MacConnect was awful, but was designed for System 8 or 9 and is of no use now because a new Mac runs OS X which is completely different.

I have found that a combination of nConvert on the Psion and MSWord (identical in code with the Windows version) on the Mac, brought together by the Psion Java Link or Apple Airport (which comes with the iMac) + a Buffalo wi-fi card in the 7Book, answers effectively all my needs. EPOC is a marvellously stable operating system; so is Mac OS X 10.4.2 and beautifully versatile etc. I doubt that you'd be anything but well fixed if you were to go ahead with an iMac.

As you've had a laptop, you could consider an iBook: it has the same system etc as an iMac, and there is even a 17" version I think. I would go that way I think, if I were to start again. But, ah, the iMac is svelte! I was seduced by the lower cost of an eMac which is virtually the same but much more conventional in shape and size (i.e., quite large).
