Hi,

This is more of a fun topic.

Does anybody know of a typing speed tester for Blackberries? :-)

I find I type very fast on a Blackberry - partly due to my hearing impairment, I frequently use a Blackberry for email. (And now since I've upgraded to a 4meg 950, I installed WebMessenger and AvidTelnetSSH for chat applications) I am able to thumb-touchtype on a Blackberry - I can type without looking at the keyboard, and even without looking at the screen either.

I timed myself typing this email message to myself for exactly 60 seconds, and this is how much text I was able to type (325 characters)Hello this is yet another test of my typing speed on this blackberry and I was wondering how fast I really do type on this little thing. I found out that I can type about seventy words per minute on this thing if I am relaxed and concentrating on this thumbtyping. It looks like I am doing much better this time around. And
(Note: I stopped mid-sentence when my 60 seconds was up. I did several 60 second typing test trials, ranging from 300 and 350 characters which is the same thing as button presses, but this is my fastest error-free time. Divide 325 by the industry standard 5-characters-per-word, and I get about 65 words per minute! Sometimes 70 words per minute if I relaxed my spelling-mistakes standards a little bit.)

I used no autotext macros that replaced my text with longer equivalents; i.e. I actually hit the Blackberry keyboard 325 times in 1 minute.

It would be fun to have a Blackberry typing test program and end users would be able to send results to a website!

It would promote the speed superiority of thumb keyboards over alternative text input methods. (Even on devices like Treo and Palm Tungsten-W would still be better than things like Grafitti) Non-blackberry users would see those inflated WPM's and then decide to try out a thumb keyboard in their next handheld which could be a Blackberry. So a fun toy like a simple Blackberry thumb typing speed tester could drive Blackberry sales!

IMHO, RIM makes the best thumb keyboards!

I imagine some people must type about this fast on a Blackberry, but I haven't met anybody....yet....

When I first got it, I typed in a paragraph that someone else gave to me. It contained a mixture of words, some very long (a technical document), and at the end I did 35 WPM with 1 mistake that I corrected.

I'm certain by now i'm up to about 50.. and I can touch type in the dark, but still make some mistakes.

and f.y.i: I have in my hands a treo.. and typing on their keyboard REALLY sucks, it's very cumbersome and I make many many more mistakes .. so I firmly believe and agree with you, the RIM keyboard is far superior.

Hi,

The Treo keyboard is more cramped than the Blackberry, but given some practice, I can type about 75% as fast on a Treo than Blackberry within 10 minutes of toying with it. I think I can eventually go 85-90% as fast if I carefully adjusted the timings of my thumb typing rythm so that I became natural at it and my two thumbs stopped colliding on that even-smaller TREO keyboard.

If RIM ever partnered with Palm for reliable always-on email, then I'd love a PalmOS-RIM hybrid. (Same for RIM-PocketPC hybrid if it went that way, but only if they squeeze a Blackberry style keyboard into a Palm sized device)

Of course, if RIM falls behind and the competition catches up.... But that still hasn't happened yet after all these years!!

Hi Mark,

Very impressive, I just got a thumb keyboard for my iPaq. I think using the thumb keyboard is so much faster than user the screeen keyboard and I really happy with it... I'm getting faster, but I still need to look at the keyboard when I type. I was wondering if you could share with me some tips or technique that I could practice to become a faster.

For example: should I alternate between thumbs for each letter, or should I divide the keyboard in half and use one thumb for one have and the other for the other half, etc.

Thanks

I greatly dislike Grafitti and never have gotten the hang of it. The BB is so much easier...

RIM has already announced deals with Palm.
