Okay, I cannot find the software to load for my zire 71. Also when the battery wears down, I lose all of my information forever. Is this normal?

You should be able to download the Palm Desktop from Palm's website. It should be under "support downloads."

Yes, you lose your information from the handheld when the battery dies-- but if you have Palm Desktop installed and you HotSync regularly, you'll just have to HotSync after charging and you'll have your information back.

Great, thanks for your reply. I had the original palm and I thought that the unit had eight or so days of memory after the battery ran down. I can't wait to use the hotsync capability.

Programs and files stored in RAM (Random Access Memory), just like in computers, require electricity to keep it in storage. When the power's gone, so does the data, just like with computers.

Hotsync, although it can be some kind of a backup, isn't a reliable means of a backup. There are lots of freeware backup programs available that allow you to backup all files to your SD card and restore back should you encounter endless reset loops. In this case, doing the hotsync will reload everything back, including whatever is causing the reset loop. That's why Hotsync isn't very reliable.
