can i set up a pop (or imap) account on my device so that it will check my mail when connected to the internet, but still sync with my desktop instead of a server.

i like syncing with my desktop for all my contacts, calendar, etc. but i'd like the device to get my email, indepedantly, upon connection (anywhere).

i need to know this is possible before i upgrade my email account, the free version doesn't included pop service

Yes, you can have 1 mail account that sync to your desktop outlook and at the same time multiple POP3 and IMAP accounts that you access directly. If you wish you can choose to sync with outlook all your PIM data but not to sync mail and access your POP3 or IMAP mail sever directly. There're also a few free 3rd party pop mail client that may work better than the Pocket Outlook.
