hotsync

I have a palm vx and it was syncing perfectly on my desktop computer with win xp.
I gave it to my son and he has a laptop with only usb
I have installed the upgraded software
My device manager says the palm is working correctly yet I can't hotsync...after a bit it says a connection can't be made
I removed everything even from the registry and re-installed...still can't sync
The palm was working fine 3 days ago and I can't figure out what to do...
Any suggestions
