novice needs help with backup

I have a 3800 ipaq and a new mac powerbook. Got Pocket Mac backup program to backup onto computer. when I attach the cradle I get message no pocket pc found. does this have to do with the mac, or is it likely a problem with the cradle itself? Also, I bought an SD card for the ipaq to backup directly but I can't find "backup" on my programs in ipaq. is there something I need to download? I appreciate help on this ... I already had to do a hard reset and lost all because my system froze and I couldn't get the connection to work and I can't risk it again!

There's 3rd party backup software that will let you backup to storage card;
Sprite Backup

Have you tried it with another usb port? Preferably direct to the computer, not through a usb hub. Also i'm not that familair with MAC os, but is there any firewall or security program that you have to adjust?

I pulled this from that crappy guide I made a long time ago.

Next time you use activesync; go to tools, backup/restore. There is an option that lets you do a backup every time you sync. This way you will always have a full backup. If you get a hard reset then simply sync and select guest partnership. Then do a restore in the backup/restore options and you have your device back again.
