after reading the post on retrieving and sending mail with yahoo mail, i am wondering if it is possible to retreive and send hotmail (or @.msn) mail with the "mail" app.

Not as far as I know.

Hotmail, I believe, requires the Opera browser but, personally, I avoid web-based email like the plague so perhaps someone who uses Hotmail can confirm the details.

I use Hotmail occasionally to monitor the mailbox of a friend whilst she's away, but I'm no expert. I have accessed it from the Psion, via Opera, as Mike quite rightly says. I don't believe there is any way of downloading it into the Psion's e-mail app, as you can with Outlook Express (for example) on PC.

Some years ago I had MSN as my ISP, with an "@msn.com" e-mail address, but even then e-mail wasn't accessible from the Psion - I wasted many frustrating hours on that one, before giving up and changing ISP - then I couldn't believe how easy it was!

Back to Opera - I can't remember at what point support for Hotmail was added. It certainly works in v5.x onwards, but I can't remember whether it did with v3.62, which is probably the one you have on your Mako CD.

Try it and report back!

Indeed....

Hotmail and AOL use proprietary systems that you can't access with the Psion machine's Email application.
As stated earlier you can access your account with the Opera browser, because it supports SSL and Javascript.
Always go the latest version that you can.

i have logged onto hotmail wiht opera, the one that came with my mako, i was only wondering if the e-mail app could do it because it rquires so much less memory to run.

Hotmail requires Cookies and SSL support in your browser, hence the need to use Opera.

This is not supported in Message Suite 1.52F (S5) or Email 2.00 (S5mx, S7, etc). It is indeed a shame....mais c'est la vie.

Isn't Hotmail IMAP? If so, you could install the IMAP plug-in and access Hotmail that way. That would only work for retrieving email.

I could be wrong about the protocol Hotmail uses but I have some recollection about this discussion before.

"IMAP4" is an email protocol often used with company email servers, where ISP email servers normally use POP3 protocol. There is an IMAP4 "plug-in" available for the Email application so that it can retrieve mail from an IMAP4 server. The "plug-in" is just an additional piece of software which is installed in the usual way with a .SIS file after which you have the option of POP3 or IMAP4 when setting up a new "Account" in Email.
