I recently got a new Dell Axim x51 and I loaded it up to the computer before Activesync was finished and in the bottom right corner the little bubbles poped up and said my Axim was finished installing. That is not my only problem, also as I finished installing my Axim the installer was interrupted as the USB drivers were being updated. I tried the usual restart, reboot, reinstall, etc. I could use some advice. Activesync will run but it will not find the device.

Uninstall active sync, reboot pc, reset the dell, reinstall active sync and try it. You might also go to control panel/system/hardware tab/device manager and see if there are any yellow question marks showing and deal with them.

Thank you for the helpful hint, but as I install ActiveSync it keeps getting interrupted before it finishes installing. I believe that to be a problem also.

What version of Activesync are you trying? For x51, you'll need the latest 4.1;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx
If you are already using 4.1, try repairing activesync, click on Start – Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and select Microsoft ActiveSync 4.x. Then click on the Change button. The wizard will walk you through the repair process.
Also try looking in the Device Manager for usb unknown device. If there is one when the Pocket PC is plugged in, then delete the device.
And do not connect the axim to the desktop before finishing activesync install. It will tell you when you can connect.

I have AS4.1 and as I install it gets interrupted right after it says "Updating USB..."(I could not read the rest). Could you point me why this might occur. Thank you for the idea I will try it and get back to you.
Edit: I tried repairing it but it gave me another interuption message. I also do not see any devices, but I will get some sleep, turn the machine off and try in the morn. It might work. Thank you again!

If you do not have your dell plugged in, and you are getting the usb error, I'd guess something else is going on, rather than the dell.
I'd uninstall everything and power down the system then boot without the dell, install ASync and see if it goes. If it does, then when it is finished try the dell. If it still gives the error, I'd look into something else. Have you installed anything else lately?
An old trick that has worked for me, may be an old wives tale, or is that a Geeks tale :-) is that windows can fix itself at times. Unhook dell, uninstall active sync, reboot, install active sync and reboot three or four times without trying to start anything and see if it changes anything.
If that fails, try to find out what the usb thing is. If there is any messages, options for more information etc. look at it and see if there are any clues.
A snoop of Micro Softs faq's might give you some clues.

Thanks for that wonderful tale, I will tell it to my grandchildren. I just found another error when i hooked my Axim up this morning, my device Manager list is blank in normal mode, but after I booted in safe mode it was fine, but I can't install things in safe mode and I was hoping that would help. Any tips on that.
You guys are great for all your help, I am gonna cover the MS F.A.Q.'s over lunch.

I suppose you could have a problem in the new dell, have you tried to hook it up to another computer?

I have a older computer and I also tried hooking it up, I ran into different problems because it is older. My dell has more processing power then my old ocmputer. It is also running 98.

I just did that thing and figured out that my dell Axim has no driver with it in the Device manager window. It was flashing with a yellow (!) sign. I do not know where to get one! Any help would be nice.

Go to device manager and delete that dell entry, then plug your dell in and see if it installs correctly. I'd guess the driver is on the cdrom that came with it or xp may have it and install it directly.
