For various reasons, I have decided to stop using the cable link and Psiwin to read data off my two Psions (5 & 7 series) and have just acquired a card-reader to read the cards from the two devices. However, I've found that when the PC opens files created in the Psions' version of Word, they're fulll of grabage, paragraphing is lost etc etc. I've also tried creating files in the Psions' jotter application, and the problem is even worse! (Funnily enough, Word files created on the PC look fine on the Psion.)
A friend has suggested that someone may have written a piece of freeware that does the conversion process. Does anyone know of such a thing?

Hi Chris,
Well, if you still have PsiWin installed on your PC (even if you're no longer using the cable link) the software is there to do the conversion from EPOC Word to MS Word. Run 'Convert files' (sensible enough) on your PC and it'll be able to cope. Alternatively I believe that AmiWord will read EPOC Word files natively and save in MS Word format - and I think it's freeware if you hunt on the net.
If you want to convert the file on the Psion before copying onto your PC then there are two programs that I can think of:
- 2ConvertU. No longer commercially available but a copy is available on my Pscience5 (http://www.pscience5.net) website (look for 'Lost & Found - Utilities').
- nConvert. Shareware but its no longer registerable (or downloadable from Neuon's site right now I believe). However, this is probably the most useful utility for you so if you want to drop me an email, I can sort something out for you.

Many thanks for those suggestions. The person who sold me the 7 Series has since come up with another solution that may be of interest - select the 'Recover text from any file' option (in the Files of type' box) in Word on the PC. This gives just a small amount of garbage at the beginning and end of the document and preserves all the paragraphing.

If you're happy just using text files then there's an option in EPOC Word to export the document as a text flie - which gets rid of the garbage issue. See Menu|File|More|Export as text file. Alternatively there's the free text editor from Symbian that generates text files directly.
Cheeers,

That does seem to work quite well, other than that you end up with paragraph breaks at the end of every line.
Many thanks
