I've got a M4, and haven't been able to get Mapsource to recognize the USB
connection to the M4. Can Mapsource "talk" to the M4 like it does my GPS-V?

Garmin techs has suggested the uninstall/install routine which is convoluted
with the unlock code, user ID code, and the City Select map database. When
the Garmin tech was questioned further about the install/uninstall and the
registry editting, it was apparent they didn't understand my question.

Simply put, I want Mapsource to transfer data to the M4 like the GPS-V....is it
possible? If so, how?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Jim

Checkout http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/M5.htm for very similar unit. Comprehensive report.

Just got my M4 two days ago-talked to Garmin yesterday. They said mapsource was compatable. I had a M5 for 7 months. Seems like there are some user friendly features but I need an external speaker. Noise in my big truck is too much for little speakers.

I just used my old M5 mapsource to download tracks from my M4. It worked fine.

Yep, Few weeks ago got my M4 & GPS-V finally able to talk to v7 of Mapsource....after spending a half of a day going through the various unlock codes. Could get one to talk and then not the other....and vicea-versa. Garmin tech said I'd have to buy a new license to use my old GPS-V on the v7 of Mapsource....FOS.

Also sent my M4 back to Garmin for them to discover that they have a problem (issue) with their Clear-Type. When I pointed out to them that all characters on the screen with long vertical lines, like the letters "l", "i", "m" etc have a pink field on the background (instead of white). So the letters look highlighted..kind of annoying. Of course you can disable Clear-Type and no problem; if you enjoy the non-Clear-Type screen! Originally they said it was 3rd party software conflict (problem still existed after I cleared RAM) but when they received my unit, they discovered the same problem on all their units. Garmin tech declared that it is a continuing Clear-Type "issue" with screen resolution and returned unit.

Also, not really happy that for all the $$$ spent on the M4, it doesn't come with a desktop application to sychronize and backup the cointacts. You have to buy a copy of Outlook. My Treo included a Palm Desktop app which allowed me to enter contacts from PC keyboard, synchronze, and backup.

All in all, I think the M4 is the most over-priced, and worst Garmin product that I ever owned (I've owned 5). Would not buy again. Better way to go is a Dell PDA, and use Bluetooth with 3rd-party GPS.

Cheers,
Jim
