I was invited as a "valued customer" to order the AXIM for a limited-time offer of extra discount. I ordered on 11/19 assuming that it was immediately available. I paid 16 bucks more to get overnight deliver. I got immediate email confirmation that it had been SHIPPED within like an hour--amazing but wait!! BTW, they also ground mailed me confirmation that a shipment occurred.
I hoped to have it before my vacation on 11/22 but it didn't come so I made arrangements for my son to drive across town daily to check for delivery. When I returned from vacation Thanksgiving, it still wasn't here.
I called today, 11/29, and they tell me it won't ship until mid December. The email and the letter were "computer errors" according to Beth. I told her to cancel the order and I was transferred four times and it took 20 minutes to cancel. I can only hope that Tom got it right.
Everyone apologized but they all argued that Dell has the right to take 30 days to complete the order. That would be okay except nowhere on the original site does it suggest that these are not in stock. Why offer "Buy Now" if they take nearly a month to build?
In previous orders from other vendors I always received an immediate computer-generated response to confirm receipt. I don't know why, but Dell never sent any messages to me at all. Furthermore, there's no way to check on the progress of the delivery--maybe that was due to the "computer error" Beth talked about, I don't know.
I've had it with Dell now. You always hear horror stories about internet vendors but why pay top dollar if someone like Dell is so cavalier about screwing you over?

I ordered mine the veyr day that the handhelds came out, the 18th, and I also paid for the next day delivery, and I am still waiting. It has been being built for the past week. I cannot believe how long this has taken...What is the big deal??

I talked to Dell on Saturday 11-30 at about 3:00 pm Pacific Time and was told that my Axim won't ship until December 17th. At least they didn't lead me along and promise a quick shipment!

IT IS SHIPPING!!!!! I am so pumped. BUT, they gave me the wrong air-bill number and they don't know what the number actually is. So, it has been shipped, but they just can't track it. How do you like that one?!

I'm just wondering, jnbowler, if they don't know the tracking number, then there is the slight chance that they have no idea if it shipped or not.
My order:

I ordered my Axim 1st thing on 11/18... got response that the ship date was 12/5. UPS tried to deliver to my home on 11/27, but I wasn't there to sign for it, so I redirected it to my work address and got it on 12/2. I'm happy.

indygardener,
1. Where do you live?
2. How did you order?
3. 400 or 300MHz?
4. What accessories did you order with it?
I'm still trying to figure Dell's method of shipping to some and not others, and why it could take so long to produce these PDAs. These are LCDs and not Plasma screens, right? ;)

More details on my successful order. I ordered online at 6:00 AM EST on 11/18 and live in Indianapolis. I got the 300 model and added a leather case and cradle as accessories. The 1st delivery attempt was 11/27. I had to redirect to my work, and due to Thanksgiving the order arrived 12/2. My friend ordered hers also on 11/18 in the evening. She got her first delivery attempt on 12/2 and redirected it and got it on 12/3. She also got the 300 with a cradle and a travel sync cable.
You DO have to sign for the delivery, so if you aren't home, you'll miss it!
So far so good. Easy to set up and use. I've previously used a Palm Professional, then a Handspring, and am happy I've made the switch to a Pocket PC

I got mine too.
Ordered a 300MHz version (no extra accessories) 7:45am EST the 18th. I got it in Virginia Monday the 2nd and yeah, my wife had to sign for it.
I'm switching over from a Palm IIIc and so far I love it. I wonder now why I had my Palm fo so long!

indygardener,
We must be thinking alike, I too am upgrading from a Handspring (had an original 2mb Visor since they came out then bought a Prism about 6 weeks ago. Sold the Prism yesterday.) and I also ordered a 300 model with a leather case and a cradle. My order was placed on 12/02 and I have an expected delivery of 12/24-12/26. Have you begun transferring info from the Handspring and, if so, is there a way to sync it over? I have a LOT of info in my Visor and really don't want to have to type it all in again.
Since you got the 300, have you had an opportunity to compare the performance with any 400 mHz models out there? I just keep wondering if I should have ponied up the extra for the 400!

I have not attempted to transfer data from my Handspring to the Axim. I basically used the Handspring to sync with Outlook at work, and had just a few documents, which I re-transferred from my desktop. I am cruising around now to different web sites to see what software I can add. I haven't had a chance to compare a 300 to a 400, but am happy so far with performance of the 300.
Hope everyone gets theirs soon so we can compare experiences using it, instead of shipping and receiving news and notes! ;)

Thanks for the info! I use Mapopolis on my Prism every day at work so I hope mine gets here soon.

I am a Dell corporate customer. I wouldn't place a whole lot of stock in the delivery date estimations. 75% of the time when we order a server from them, it arrives a day before we ever receive the confirmation email stating it was shipped.
Besides, what do you expect from a company based in the same state that gave us George W.? :)
Good luck.
Craig
PS - I bought an iPaq from a nobody dealer and got it in 2 days.

I ordered my 300 mhx with case and cradle on Dec 3rd. The next day I got an e-mail telling me that the expected delivery was going to be Dec 26th.
Yesterday, I checked the status online and it said:
"Your order has completed shipping preparation and should be picked up by the carrier on the ship date 12/5/2002.
The estimated delivery day for your order is between 12/9/2002 and 12/11/2002"
Wow, that's fast !!! I live in Toronto Canada and ordered via the Canadian WEB site: Dell.ca
Perhaps they have more stock ?

I've reached 'Shipped' status. I ordered the 400MHz with the 128 SD Card from the website on November 26th. Given that I live 2 hours from the factory, I expect mine to arrive either tomorrow(Saturday) or Monday.
The Canadian order is pretty remarkable considering the typical wait. The only thing I can say is "Don't count your chickens." When the Axim is in your hands, you can be impressed with the speedy order.

I ordered the 400 Mhz Axim today 12/07/02 No accessories, and Next day air as shipping, So the Estimated Ship date is 12/19/02 but it is estimated and its not an exact guess, like you guys have been saying.
The reason i went ahead and bought the 400 mhz flavor, is that it came with the extra 16 mb rom, and another 32 mb ram, and it came with the damn cradle. Now I know an extra 46 mb of storage does not usually qualify another 100 dollars, but with the cradle, the 46 mb of memory, and the 100 mhz faster proccessor, I figured what the hell, I might as well go ahead and get it. I mean whats 100 dollars to keep your little hand held in the "mainstream" for a little while longer, its better than having to buy another PDA. Also, I saw that the Ipaq (the one with the same stats that the 400 mhz is) is $749 with a free case, now I don't know for sure, but are they paying 399 for a case and an Ac adapter? Even if it does have a i0nternal wireless Lan card, How big of a deal is it to take out 1 card, and put another card in? You don't have to constantly have to have the memory in there, and you don't have to have the availability be on the internet at all time. At least I don't, I would much rather keep the 399 to myself, and Buy some extra goodies.....

I am in an unfortunate situation. My iPAQ 3660's screen just went out on me and the unit is out of warranty. After reading about Dell's new PDAs, I thought it would be a good replacement. I have had some difficulties in ordering from Dell. I am currently living in Hong Kong. Dell's web store only ships to US addresses. I called Dell's Hong Kong branch hoping to place an order. The sales rep told me they will not be available over here until August 2003. I asked why Dell is waiting so long to introduce them overseas. I was told, "It is our marketing strategy." I was really hoping to order an Axim X5 right now. This is a real bummer.
