Are you running any firewall or security program including the build-in firewall on XP SP2?

hi there all i hope sombodt can help me with this dell x5 when i got this second hand i downloaded activesynce 4.1 and it was working okay.
but as it had tomtom 5 on it already and it would not work properly (no gps etc)i tried to reload tomtom 3 from cd as aparently tomtom 5 does not like the x5?
when i try to up load tom tom 3 from the cd it load some then after a while the pc crashes and starts up again every time i try after contacting dell they tell me to use activesynce 3.8 but when i tried to delet 4.1 i had to clean it out manualy because the crashes had lost the progam as far as removal was concerned.
so i got rid of most?
now when i download activesync 3.8 it doe not work properly it says connect but i cant seen anything>
when i loaded it it hung for about two minets at 92% then finished but cant see any thing
any ideas please

Perhaps you did not uninstall version 4.1 completely. Take a look at #9 on this
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x.htm
and reinstall version 3.8 again.

Looks like you've not completely remove ActiveSync 4.1.

Do this:
1. Use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall ActiveSync 3.8
2. Search for these files and delete them:
• c:\windows\system32\rapi.dll
• c:\windows\system32\ceutil.dll
Note: They may be located in \windows\system depending on your OS.
3. Re-install ActiveSync 3.8 normally.

I read with interest instructions on how to uninstall activesync 4.1, which said:
after uninstalling remove RAPI.dll and CEUTIL.dll from windows\system32

I did that, but trying to installe activesync 3.8 I still get the message 'the installed version is newer than the one you try to install', so, apparently some vital traces of 4.1 still exist.

Can anyone help?

Did you restart the desktop after delete those files (and before re-installing old activesync)?

Yes, I restared after uninstalling, but no succes.

Nice detail: Microsoft states they don't give service on Activesync, since it is a free program. So Microsoft think tey are entitled to distribute software that ruins your computer and then redraw, because you did not have to paf for it.

I got several hints how to remove AS 4.1, including deleting RAPI.dll and CEUTIL.dll. Both DLL's seem to be used bij Route 66 navigator. And still 4.1 is not really deleted. So the problem as such still exitests.

I solved it the raw way be reinstalling an older image (before installing 4.1).

I hope I now learned foor good to make an image just before installing a new program, even if it seems a routine installation!
