Hi there,

I am new at this. Just got a 3200, installed base maps an detailed maps on to the pda memory. Then later i bougth a sandisk 1g SD card, now I want to install all again on the SD card.
How is the process for deleting all maps? Just deleting them using the delete function from the App drop list would be safe?
Then reinstaling base maps from the Setup CD to the SD card and then the detailed maps from Palm Desktop (Map Install) also to the card?
By the way: is there an option (I cannot find it) to deselect some maps in the Map Install already listed there from the previous installation?
Apparently you can only add new areas to the list.

Thanks!

Hi!

1.
Detailed maps are stored in just one file *.img (Gmapsupp.img and .txt for log), also the base map is stored in just one file *.img.

Just delete this files with any ique/palm application that can do this.

1.1 There is another solution. When installing new detailed maps the older map will be owerwritten. But you wanna install maps to SD card so that is not for you.

2.
I suggest you to save all your work (backup), then make a hard reset of your Ique=to get clean mashine.

3. Install al the necessary must have 3th part programs and other programs from you ique setup cd (voice and basemap, check also for update/patch on garmin site) to Ique's internal memory then via mapinstall or mapsource program install detailed maps to SD card.

4.
By the way: is there an option (I cannot find it) to deselect some maps in the Map Install already listed there from the previous installation?

You should use the Mapsource program where you can save your set of detailed map and where you can later remove or add (deselect) other maps.

Mapsource program is on Ique install cd, after install check also for updates at garmins site.

It has been shown on another forum that too big a MapFile on a 1GB card slows down the 're-draw' of maps on the unit!!! This is important if you are navigating in a large City with a lot of detail but less important if you are in rural Wales. We have just proved that the re-draw using 850MB of maps is sometimes much slower than using 250MB of maps

It has been shown on another fourum that the Basemap is better on the internal memory as it sometimes conflicts with the 're-draw' of maps on the unit!

Just deleting them using the delete function from the App drop list would be safe?---Works for me.

To de-select a maptile 'click on it'
To de-select several maptile select the tiles and press 'control' [Ctrl]

Have you thought of using a card reader and MapSource without Palm Desktop?

Jago, Strumble

Thank you for your help and time. I figured out.
Being a newbie I was scared of doing something wrong i guess.

While we are on the topic of Basemaps, I just sourced a slow 128M card (swiped from my GF's old camera), and wanted to put my detail maps on it, but keep the basemap in the internal memory (so as to get the best performance - based on what I can gather from the "best practices" regarding cards 'round here).

No worries... I deleted the detail map from internal memory, and loaded up the card a much larger detail map. Great. Things seem to work OK, and no huge performance hit (tho it seem kinda slow to scroll around Montreal, but I never tried with Montreal loaded on internal memory)... tho this is a small card.

Then I got thinking... wouldn't I be better off using the larger basemap, now that I have room for it? I went to load up the basemap from the set-up CD, and it claims that I can only put the large basemap on the card. Odd. So... I started thinking some more... why not load the large basemap onto the card, and then just copy it into the internal memory? Sounds like a good idea, right? For some reason it does not work, I'm using Zfile to manage the files, and when I go to copy the GMAPBMAP.IMG file from the card to the internal memory, I get informed that "There was an error during copy, stopping." Anyone know why? I've tried deleting the basemap from internal memory first, and I've tried to copy over top of it. I've tried messing with the atributes of the large basemap prior to copying, as well as renaming it GMAPBMAP (no .img). One other thing that I did notice is that sometimes when I load the large basemap, the file shows as only being 13B, not 13M like I'd expect it to be (tho sometimes it shows as the correct size, when that happens the basemap in memory is listed as being ~43B, not the 5M that it usually is).

The bottom line question is:
Is it possible to run the large US Basemap in internal memory? If so, how do I make that happen?

Also, I've read a bunch of the threads about memory cards and how to get the best performance with them (Fast cards usefull, or a waste of cash? Basemaps on card, or in internal memory? 3600 vs 3200... can one make use of the fast cards and the not the other?) and it seems like there are almost as many opinions as there are members of this forum. Anyone have a definitive FAQ on this for us newbies?

Thanks --Bill
