I have an Ipaq 3630 which I want to use to connect to a Windows 2000 Dial-Up Server. (Not Active Sync...)

I am using a US Robotics 56k Fax Ext. Modem. I have made a lead which connects to it from the 9pin on the cradle.

I have set up the Connection on the Ipaq, (Username, Password, Phone etc.).
When I tap the connection item the modem dials and both the devices connect, (I even get a friendly status message telling me so). However, at that point nothing more happens. After about 30 more seconds I get a 'Disconnected' message box.

Does anyone know how to do this Remote Networking? I am a bit stuck as I don't really know what I have done wrong. I guess it is the Authentication that is going wrong although nothing tells me so. The Dial-Up Server on the Pc should be okay as I use it for other Pc's to connect.

Check the security log using the event viewer to see if you are actually communicating with the server. Also watch the RRAS port monitor to verify that the connection is established with the server.

Unfortunatley the Ras Status Monitor does not appear until the connection has been authenticated and is completely established.

The System log tells me:
'The user connected to port COM1 has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time. '

which I kind of guessed anyway, but I know the username and password are correct. I don't know what else it could be. I have tried so many options now my brain is numb.

Justin, Have you fixed this yet?

I have had a similar problem which was solved by changing the setting on the RAS server to hand out specific IP addresses rather than issuing them from the DHCP server.

I did actually find a solution, (although fix is not quite the right word.)

I went with using Header Compression and Auto Detect the address, (i.e. Do not use Fixed Addresses - I can't do that because the program I am writing has to be variable per customer). I also (and this was the key bit) lowered the modem speed. (I started with 9600 and moved up until it didn't work anymore, then lowered to best.)

And what do you know! It works like a dream.
I am still in shock.
