I've got a hx4700 iPaq, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a possible upgrade to the bluetooth stack?
I'm looking to add the headset profile to the device itself, so I can use it as a handheld for Skype etc, as I'm sure it must be possible...

Anyone any ideas/info?

hx4700 already has headset profile, i think it's called Hands Free Profile (HF).

Hrm...
Well, I can't find it.

In Settings/Services I've got the following things all enabled:
File Transfer
Information Exchange
Serial Port
Personal Network Server
Audio Gateway

And browsing from my PC I can view the following services on the iPaq:
Audio Gateway
Bluetooth Serial Port
File Transfer
Network Access
OBEX Object Push

So I'm at a bit of a loss where it would be...
I can happily set the PC to be a "headset" and get audio from the iPaq out my main speakers, but what I'm looking for is to do it the other way round...

Just use HP's Bluetooth Wizard.

Unfortunately that doesn't appear to give me the option:
If I browse the PC from the iPaq for services it only brings up the serial port and file transfer services, and I don't have a suitable option in the wizard to use the iPaq as the "headset" device in the audio pair.
I've got:
Connect to Internet
ActiveSync
Browse files
Hands-free/Headset setup (note, this sets the iPaq to use the PC speakers, and is not what I'm looking for)
Connect to a Network
Join a PAN
Exchange Business Cards

Is there a hidden option I'm missing here, or a suitable software update to the WIDCOMM stack or PPC2003?

Have you tried Hands-free/Headset setup? That's exactly what you need. It's not for setting the iPaq to use the PC speakers.

Erm. But that's exactly what it does...

Connect the PC as Handsfree/Headset (as seen from the iPaq end), and if I play an mp3 on the PDA the audio comes out of my PC. I assume the microphone works similarly.
Plus, in this scenario if I play audio on the PC it comes out of the PC speakers still - if the headset connection was a "headset" on the PDA end I'd expect the audio to come out there, and it doesn't, even when the PC preferred audio device is set to Bluetooth Audio. I assume in that case it's just black-holing everything as it doesn't reckon it's connected to a working headset.

I've tried doing it the other way round, and getting the PC to connect to the PDA - it just comes up with "This device does not provide the headset profile", which is where I come back to my original point of "how/where can I enable it?"

Perhaps i misunderstood, but i thought that you are trying to connect bluetooth headset to hx4700 and use it with Skype running on the ipaq. It should not involve PC at all,

Ahhh, nope, sorry. Perhaps a poor choice of example.

Consider Skype on the PC, and I'm trying to use the PDA as the "headset" - it's got a mic, and the PC doesn't.

I see, now we are getting somewhere. No you can't use ppc as a mic for pc. But Skype has a version for Pocketpc, you can run it on the ipaq the use Connect to a Network bluetooth profile on the ipaq to connect to the desktop and share internet connection. You should then be able talk and listen through Skype service on the ipaq. Here's a bluetooth network guide;
