Has anyone tried using a CF adapter to read SD cards in a Psion 5?
I've spotted this on ebay and thought it might be a good way to transfer files between my Pocket PC and Psion...

Anyone with experience of doing this?

Hi Tony,
I spotted the same eBay item and looked around. No experience yet, but I bought a PNY adapter with a 16MB SD card for $32 + S&H. It's on its way to me from:

I'll post the outcome. I use SD's in my camera, so this was attractive to me.
Best wishes,

I will be interested to hear how you get on!
Are you intending on using this with a 5mx or 5?

I have both, so it will be a comprehensive test. Weirdly, the seller only ships by UPS at a significant premium over the US Postal Service's rates and a significant delay over the USPS's deliveries. That will slow my replying here.
It's been a decade since I set my S3 aside. Now I'm in an abrupt Psion frenzy: 2 S3's, 2 S3a's, an S5, an S5mx, with an S3mx in the mail. Plus a bunch of cables and add-ons, and lengthy downloads of software (at dial-up speeds!). I'm sure there's a PhD in Psychology in this somewhere. :)
Maybe there's a longing for the age of competence Psion represents? <Sigh>
Best wishes,
Lewis

Tony, I don't think this, or similar, adapters would work, because it's partly external and so, even if it slots in OK, it'll fall foul of the 5mx's CF door interlock - CF cards aren't recognised until the door is closed.
The PNY adapter looks very neat & interesting, though. I remember seeing something like this from Carry Computing (see: http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37085 and attached pic), along with a number of other useful looking adapters; but, none of these appear to be available anymore, except for their 6-in-1 PCMCIA adapter, rebranded 'didigo'. I was told (also, some time ago), by a camera shop, that Minolta made a SD-CF adapter but it was very expensive (IIRC, c.£60!). The Totallyradgear.com site makes no mention of the PNY adapter's CF Type and the Carry Computing ones were Type-II (so, completely useless for the 5mx!). However, I found a PNY press release (http://www.pny.com/pressroom/pressReleases/view.asp?pressID=64) which specifies their adapter as Type-I, so this rather neat little device looks very promising... look forward to hearing your report, Paul.
Pity the PNY unit doesn't seem to be sold by anyone in the UK and, worse, going by some of the Google results I found in trying to locate a UK source, and given PNY's website carries no mention of the adapter amongst current products, it looks as though their adapter is also discontinued (it was launched 3 years ago). So, if it works, might be worth buying before old stocks sell through.

Thanks for the advice Lewis. I was wondering whether or not the size of the adapter would get in the way of the CF door. I shall wait for Paul's verdict :)

Paul's reply might be long in coming. I haven't received the adapter, and totallyradgear.com has neither provided a tracking number nor responded to my email concerning the order's status. I suggest containing any enthuiasm until I can report a successful transaction.
Drat.

I just hopped on to their site - the copyright date at the bottom is 1999-2002 - so doesn't look too promising... :(
Any news at this respect? ...

Alas, the vendor to whom I innocently sent my money for the SD-to-CF adaptor has absorbed the money and declined to respond to enquiries. I can persuade VISA to indemnify me against the loss, but the opportunity for investigating the original idea seems to have been lost.
I'm sorry. :( It somehow sad that so many interesting artifacts that we can use on a psion are very difficult to find...
