Ok, here goes, please understand one thing and that is my Palm is in French so during this post anything I put in quotes is translated and I am not sure if it is the same in English, but maybe you can give me an answer.

After I finish my hotsync the palm breaks the connection and on the palm it says "cleaning up" "please wait". What is this "cleaning up" and why does it take almost as long as the hotsync? No problem, just wondering.

Have a good day & thanks,
Calvados

That's actually a very good question. Unless your actual hotsync is very fast the 'clean-uop' and 'please wait' time should be very minor in comparison.

Anyone know the real answer as to what is being done at these times?

"Cleaning up-Please wait" is that moment when the Palm sets the last sync time in memory and makes sure all the archive attributes are set and the conduits closed. It should not take more than 30 seconds if all is well with your conduits etc.
I suggest you see if this issue persists beyond another 3 or 4 HotSync cycles. If it fails to correct itself I would look to the conduits first, both native (Palm to desktop or Chapura to Outlook) and any third party.

Thanks folks, that answers my question. My hotsync does take a while because I am hotsyncing 10 MSmoney accounts with 3 or 4 years of information. The "cleanup" takes about 45 seconds.

Thanks again and have a good day,

Just another question, I read somewhere that all PDA's had problems after awhile with memory fragmentation and that after a certain OS version (I think it was 3.5) this was no longer a problem. Does this mean that the Palm defragments the memory automatically or does it just not cause a problem anymore?

Thanks again and sorry to ask so many questions,

Most people that I know recommend that you still -- even with 4.1 -- do an occassional hard reset and reinstallation of software and data. Some of this may be to get rid of orphaned files, but I suspect that efficient memory allocation is also part of the consideration. I wouldn't bet money on that, however.
