help: screen problem

Hi. I was recently charging up my ipaq 5550 on the cradle and all of a sudden the screen spawned this strange dead region across it. Sometimes if i leave the pda off for a long time, the next time that i turn it on the dead region isnt there but it then spawns back after around 10 seconds. I have tried a soft and hard reset but it doesnt go away. Is this damage perminent, what needs to be done to fix it?

Also while im here. I was wondering if there was any software which allows you to use the directional pad on an ipaq as a mouse cursor rather than using its touchscreen feature.
