Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Screen U/S & need to take a backup using remote link
My screen has been playing up for some time and has now failed totally. I need to take a backup using my remote link but obviously cannot see what I'm doing. I'm not sure what apps I've got open...I think there is a hotkey to exit all apps but can't remember what it is. If someone could give me precise steps to take in order to activate my remote link 'blindly' I would be most grateful. A quick reply would be most grateful as I'm getting a lot of "I told you so's" from my wife at the moment.

I assume that you are using a 3a/3c/3mx because you don't actually say :)
The keypress [Shift-Psion-A] will "Exit all applications". It wouldn't do any harm also to press the "System" button to be absolutely certain that you are in the System screen.
Then:
[Psion-L] to open the Link dialog box
[L] to select "Link cable"
[Down arrow] to move to the Baud rate line
[5] to select 57600
[Enter] to close the dialog box and activate the serial link
If you are using a 3a, press [1] instead of [5] to set the baud rate to 19200 which is the maximum for the 3a.

Need to get the screen fixed on my 3c, (just coming up as a load of black smudge, sometimes I can see what I am doing if I tilt the screen and hold it at an angle - bit difficult) Any ideas who will do this and where I should go to in London?

Pinnock Organiser Services in Streatham should be able to help you:
http://www.posltd.com
Full contact details on their website. I haven't used their services personally, but always hear good feedback from other members on this forum and elsewhere.

Thanks Julie. Will give them a try and let you (and anyone else following the thread) know the outcome!

You may do just as well checking out Cash Converters or similar second-hand shops. I managed to get a 3c for £70 a couple of years ago and a 3mx for £60 last year. They are becoming more difficult to find though.

I'm sort of hoping they will be able to fix the screen without losing any of the data stored on my 3C. If that's not going to be possible then I guess I may as well just go for a new (well second hand) 3C (or MX version of my 3C). As for why I haven't got all my data backed up on my regular PC apparently the software I bought a few years ago to do this can't run on Windows 2000. Not sure whether this is just our IT guy spinning me a load of baloney!
Anyway thanks for the suggestion. I rang the shop in Streatham and they are fully booked until Jan, so I will have to wait a while yet before I can make any progress. Who knows perhaps my wife will have bought me a Palm Pilot for christmas!! (no chance I'm afraid)

It is true that the version of PsiWin you will have acquired some time ago will not work with Win 2000. You need the latest version - 2.3.3 - it's available as a free download from Psion's site. You need to register your Psion there before you can download.
http://www.psion.com/MyPsion/Login.asp
I should warn you that it's about a 25Mb download.
As far as I know, this version of PsiWin works fine with all Psions - I'm sure Mike McC will confirm this, as I know he has a 3c. I have certainly used it OK with a Siena.
If you can just about manage to see your screen currently, then you should be able to achieve a back up, since it's pretty much controlled by the PC.
It could well be that a replacement machine might be more economical than the repair, but at least you will be able to restore current data to the the new one if that's the road you choose.
If it's a screen cable problem, I believe the repair at POS costs around £70. For what it's worth, people I know who've had such repairs have all reported machine returned with data intact.
Hope that helps

I haven't had any problems with PsiWin 2.3.3 and Siena, 3c, S5 or 5mx but I am running it with Windows XP. My machine with Windows 2000 has an external modem on its only serial port so I haven't actually installed PsiWin in that PC.
