I am a student and regularly use the computers at university for working on, but obviously can't install programs on their computers! The problem is, I often want to get information (for example, notes I've made, lists of books from the library catalog etc) from the computer to my palm zire 31 (& sometimes vice versa). I have a little extendable hotsync cable that I carry round with me (it is also a USB charger, which is very useful!), so physically attatching them isn't a problem.

I know about various programs which will allow me to read things like .txt files on the palm, so that's not a issue either.

So what I need to know is: Is there a program out there which could allow me to connect my palm to a PC (via USB) and transfer information between them without having to install anything on the PC? I've tried google but I wasn't really sure what such a program would be described as, so I didn't have much luck!

Thanks for your help.

Ok, I think I've answered my own question!!

I've found a program called Softick Card Export II, which enables you to use your palm as though it were a portable storage device. From what I can gather, you just install it on the palm and when you plug it into any computer capable of reading from portable storage devices it will treat it just the same way as it would a flash memory drive or whatever. Unfortunately it's not free :( , but you can't have everything!! They do have a free trial download, though, so I can have a go and see if it's worth the money ($14.95) before I buy it! Unless anyone knows of a free or cheaper program that does something similar??

There is a freeware program called PFB that does pretty much the same thing, but the downside is that you have to also install an app on the PC. You seem to have found the best way to do the job... an alternative would be to get a SD/MMC card reader and use that to save text files to a card. (Either way, you're carrying something extra around.)

Thanks, Telyx. I do need a solution that doesn't involve installing anything on the PC, though, so I think the Softick program is more suitable (although freeware would be nice!!).

On that note, I have actually installed it now (literally 5 mins ago!), and it seems to work fine on my home PC, just need to check it on the uni computers to make sure I can actually use it for the purposes I need it for. It is literally exactly the same as using a USB flash memory drive, just plug it in and the computer automatically recognises it & you can browse your palm expansion card just like any other drive. I tested it by opening one of the photos I've got stored on the SD card & removing the red eyes, then saving it straight back to the card. Really quick, easy & straightforward. So I'm pretty much convinced I'll buy it since it will make life so much easier!!

Of course now I'm regretting buying the USB flash memory drive I got a couple of months ago; I should have just got a higher capacity SD card for my palm!! Oh well, hindsight is a wonderful thing!!
