Hi, i'm new to this board and also new to PDA's. I bought a Clie S360 from ebay that was refurbished. I have let the Clie charge for a couple hours, but the only way i can get it to turn on is if i have it plugged into the cradle. Once i take it out, it won't turn on and when i plug it back in it starts all over again and doesn't remember anything i had done before when it was plugged in. I downloaded a battery program called Batteryinfo and it says the battery is at 4.18 volts. So what is the problem??? Is the batterinfo program reading the voltage coming from the charger?? This is pretty frustrating. Thanks in advance - Doug

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that either there's a problem that
it's either:
A) The refurbishing job failed to address and that it has something to do with the battery not getting charged.
B) Another case of what is being reported all over this board about how the Clie S300 series doesn't like having it's battery discharged completely. If an automobile showed this kind of defect I'd expect the manufacturer to issue a recall. Since it's Sony I don't expect doodley-squat.

As for voltages, I looked at the specifications for the S360 interface connector and found several different voltages that the PDA uses when connecting to the outside.

Pin #3 provides the DTR signal at 5.5V but is 0 when there is no data ready to transmit. It's a data terminal so it probably doesn't apply to your problem.

Pin #9 is the power supply terminal that provides voltage to power the body at 5.7V.

Pin #11 is a raw power supply that can be 3.4 - 4.2 V.

None of them says what the internal battery voltage is or should be but the label on the back of my S360 says that it is DC 5.7V and 800 mA. Since this matches with what the voltage to the body (Pin #9) is, it's probably a safe bet that this is something like what the voltage is that is required to run the beast.

As for what your battery program is, I could not say.

I also found this on the Sony Support site:

The Battery On The CLIE Handheld Ran Out And All The Data Is Gone.

Solution:

When the CLIE handheld battery runs down through normal usage, a caution message appears. If this caution is displayed, charge the CLIE Handheld immediately to avoid losing data. If it is not possible to charge the CLIE Handheld immediately, it is recommended that the unit be powered off until it is possible to do so.

If the battery drains completely (battery indicator reads 0) and the CLIE handheld is left in an uncharged state for an extended period of time, all of the stored data will be erased. Sony recommends charging the CLIE handheld frequently.

NOTE: Even if the battery runs down and data is lost, only new data created since the last backup will be permanently lost. Data can be backed up to a computer by synchronizing the handheld and the computer. Data can also be saved to Memory Stick by using MS Gate. Sony recommends backing up data frequently.

This solution is divided into the following sections:

Section I. How To Charge The CLIE Handheld Battery.
Section II. How To Synchronize The CLIE Handheld With A Computer.
Section III. How To Back Up The CLIE Handheld Data Using Memory Stick Media.
Section IV. How To Restore Data To The CLIE Handheld From Memory Stick Media.

NOTE: When entering characters to the Sony handheld via the screen keyboard, or when specifying the application to execute, press lightly on the desired button or icon with the stylus. This action of pressing lightly on the screen with the stylus is called "tapping."

Please proceed to the appropriate section below.

Section I. How To Charge The CLIE Handheld Battery.

IMPORTANT: When the battery remainder status reads 0, it is not necessary to change the battery. The battery should be charged with the cradle as soon as possible. Do not disassemble the Sony handheld or remove the battery.

1. Connect the AC adapter to a working AC outlet.

2. Connect the other end of the AC adapter to the CLIE handheld cradle.

3. Place the CLIE handheld securely in the cradle.

NOTES:

* It is recommended to use the cradle and AC adapter that came with the CLIE handheld.

* It takes about four hours to charge the CLIE handheld when the battery is empty.

* It takes only a few minutes to charge the battery when the CLIE handheld is charged every day.

* It is possible to use the CLIE handheld while it is charging, however, this will increase the time required to charge the battery.

* The CLIE handheld must be turned off in order to fully charge the battery.

Section II. How To Synchronize The CLIE Handheld With A Computer.

NOTE: The CLIE handheld uses more power during a HotSync operation than during normal operation. It is recommended that the AC Adapter be used when performing a HotSync if the battery is low.

1. Check the computer's system tray to make sure the HotSync Manager is running. If it is not, open HotSync Manager from the Programs menu.

A. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Sony Handheld and click HotSync Manager.

2. Make sure the cradle is connected securely to the computer. If connected through a USB hub, connect the cradle directly to the computer bypassing the hub.

3. Make sure the Sony handheld is seated in the cradle correctly.

4. Press the Hot Sync button on the cradle.

Section III. How To Back Up The CLIE Handheld Data Using Memory Stick Media.

MS Gate makes it possible to save a backup of the following application and data of the CLIE handheld to Memory Stick media. The file name after the colon is the name displayed in MS Gate.

Applications:

* Plugin files: CmPl###
* PictureGear Pocket: PictureGear Pocket
* gMovie: gMovie
* Network setup data: inetSetup

Data:

* Address Book data: AddressDB
* Date Book data: DatebookDB
* Memo Pad data: MemoDB
* Expense data: ExpenseDB
* To Do List data: ToDoDB
* Network setup information: NetworkDB
* Other application setting data: SavedPreference
* User information and other preferences data: UnsavedPreference

NOTES:

* For application and data file names associated with third party programs please refer to the manufacturer of those programs.

* If necessary files are not backed up, applications may not function properly.

* Do not select Graffiti ShortCuts, Net Prefs, or sonyres files, since they cannot be copied.

* It is not possible to copy data marked with a lock icon.

* It may not be possible to back up full information if some data is locked or shared.

* Copying data consumes a lot of power, it is not possible to use Memory Stick media when the CLIE handheld is short of battery power. In the case of low battery power, connect the CLIE handheld to the AC adapter.

* If infrared communication is received while copying data, the copying will be terminated. Do not allow infrared communication while copying data.
