My wife just got a old palm 111 from a friend. it appears to be new but there is no software for it. I have palm m505 and already have desk top software loaded. What do I do to enable her to hot sync with her serial cable?

In HotSync Manager in your PC you should be able to set it to sync from "USB" to "USB/Serial". That should do it.

Make sure your COM port is usable - no IRQ conflicts, etc.

Try the BIOS setup on the PC. Last time I heard about this problem, the COM ports were deactivated in BIOS. Windows Device Manager is only able to tell that COM ports are on the motherboard, not whether they are activated.

Thanks again. You have been very helpful. If I only knew how to check the Bios. If it is easy give me some hints if not I may wait and call palm and pay for their support. Thanks Again

When you boot up your computer:
1) there should be a tiny message saying something like "F2=setup" or "ESC for setup", etc.
2) press F2, Esc, etc. on your keyboard before it gets much further.
3) the PC's motherboard will put up a DOS-like screen that shows all of its settings. There will be several pages.
4) look thru the screens for COM, and make sure it is on/active.
5) exit and save BIOS setting changes.
6) the computer will then start booting from the beginning.

Welcome to the good old days. Some computer manufacturers turn off COM ports because they are so passe - everything is USB or FireWire now.
