Here I go again. I still have not got this thing to sync. It synced as much as two weeks ago and won't any more. I have a IPAQ 3950 and when I go to Sync it gives me an error 604. It says it cannot start communication with the desktop computer due to critical error (Error 604). I looked under the help menu and nothing shows up for Error 604. If anybody knows what to go please reply. I have tried it several times.
Thanks

Try uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling ActiveSync on the host. If you haven't yet upgraded to 3.6, maybe upgrading will clear up the problem.

I have an iPAQ 3955 and recieve the same critical error 604. I have upgraded to Active Sync 3.7 and still have the same problem. Have tried two different laptops (work/home) and different USB cables. Restarted (hard) the PDA seveal times and still can not connect. Any ideas what to try next? If I can't sync to Outlook the PDA is useless!

I tried syncing my ipaq 3955 last night and received this message on the ipaq screen:
Cannot start communications with the desk top computer. Remote networking could not start due to a critical error (error 604).
Oddly, I'd just synced several hours previously with no problems. A soft reset didn't help. Neither did deleting and reloading Activesync on my desktop. I've googled all over the place and can't even find a definition of error 604. Anybody know anything? I'm really confused and frustrated.

After reading several posts, I finally fixed the 604 error (without really knowing what it was or what caused it).
1. I backed up my Ipaq to the SD card.
2. Did a hard reset
3. Tried the USB port again
4. Communication worked!
5. Resotred everything from card
6. Got the 604 error message again
7. Did another hard reset
8. Restored everything except registry
9. Had to rename device
10. Things working fine for the moment.

Still clueless about what in the registry caused the error.

How did you restore everything 'except' the registry?

When you choose restore backup on your Ipaq, you're taken to a screen where there are a bunch of folders. One of them is registry. Uncheck that.

I had the dreaded error 604 that no one seems to be able to fix and i cured it this way. Using PHM's regedit on the ipaq

I navigated to HKEY CURRENT USER->COMM->RASBOOK and checked the 'USB key . The DevCfg was set to 0's. I copied the '115200 default key DevCfg value back into the USB key, after saving a backup copy of the register to SD card. when i tried recradling my 3850 it sync'ed beautifully and has been doing so ever since. No resets No info or program losses No reinstalls needed. Hope this helps

I just started experiencing the error 604 problem with my Compaq 3835. Rather than do a hard reset I'm trying to execute the fix explained by ariapro2002 in the above post.

But I've been unable to locate "HKEY CURRENT USER->COMM->RASBOOK" on my PPC. Can someone tell me where to find it?

Also, I've downloaded PHM's register editor to my PC but don't know how to get in onto my PPC, because it won't sync! Is there a different tool for making the recommended change to the DevCfg?

I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!

Can you use memory storage card such as CF card with your ipaq? you can download installer and transfer from desktop to the ipaq via storage card. Infared transfer may also work if you have ir port on the desktop or laptop. Otherwise you need internet connection on the ipaq so you can download the installer directly to your ipaq. Do you have other 3rd party programs installed? Resco File Explorer has registry editing function. If you can't install registry editor, you will need to do hard reset as suggested above.

Thanks for the advice AnswerDude. I struggled for a while trying to fix things and then just did a hard reset. I had been dreading doing the hard reset but it wasn't as much of a pain as I had anticipated. Up and running again with no data loss! Kent
