For a number of reasons I want (and need) to replace my notebook.

I am entertaining the idea of using a Netbook.

Most of the appl I need and use can be converted and/or substituted but I still have 2 questions before buying a unit:

1. Related to storage – I carry a large number of documents, is Neybook compatible with the IBM (or similar) micro hard-drives? (the ones to be used on the type II slot). On the same issue, if yes, can I run applications from the micro hd?
2. Netbook can be plugged to an external burner? If yes, what brand?

Thank you

1. Yes, you can use the IBM CF-interface microdrive. However, large solid state CF cards take less power and now have capacity up to 1GB! Solid state cards are suggested in preference to a hard drive.

2. No, the netBook cannot talk to CDROM drives in any way, not for reading or for writing.

The only way in which I think a netBook loses out to a notebook is in multi-media. Most notebooks are stereo, supporting sample rates up to 44kHz and 16bit data (plus video of course!) whilst the netBook is 12bit mono, altougth it will do 44kHz. And you can forget about video entirely!

If you do not want multimedia capabilities, then IMHO the netBook is a complete solution.

I was informed that IOMEGA's pcmcia disk(if I am correct 40Mb disks which are very affortable) also work correctly with the netbook.

Well guys, with the storage issue resolved I am going to buy a unit this afternoon. (No, I don’t need multimedia, I need the cd support for my doc archive – I think I can fit a lot on Iomega’s disk)

Thank you very much

Wow! Is that really true about the Iomega 'Click!' PCMCIA things?

Does anybody have any first hand experience of this?

I (foolishly?) just sold mine thinking I would never have a use for it again now that I've converted to CF-based Netbook life.

enlighten me, please.

David.

I don’t know (yet) about the Iomega Click, what I know is that I barely sleep 2 hours this night: I just couldn’t stop playing with my new toy.

I can say without reservation that my netbook purchased two years ago is still very cool and bleeding edge. I am now dictating onto it for my office notes and having it transcribed over the net by a service, along with all the other stuff.

What other piece of consumer electronics gives this kind of mileage?

regards
