Here is a crazy idea. Since IQue has a build-in microphone, then, theoretically, it should be possible to write a software to have IQue recognize some simple voice commands. This would be very useful and safer when driving. Instead of looking at the screen and use stylus or finger or even stop to find and route to some place you could simply say "Find -> Waypoints -> Home -> Route". This can even be integrated with Fastfinger, so you can assign voice command to a macro.
Is there anything like this already available?
Are there smart developers out there who accept this challenge? I won't even charge you for the idea ;)

So, no one likes this idea? :)

Like the idea? Yes. Develop an app for it? Nope. Voice recognition on top of GPS functions on top of map display on top of PDA functions... kinda think the CPU isn't up to all that fun at once.

I think it's a great idea. Eventually all automobile GPS will be voice activated. But I agree that the CPU on the IQUE may be inadequate. When I injured my wrist, I tried using voice-activated browsing on my home computer. The program was huge and relatively slow.

This is sad :( I'm not very technical, so I don't really know all this stuff. As I said in my original post, it was a CRAZY idea :)

Crazy ideas are what keeps our economy going.
It is a legitimate wish but as others have said the technology is not quite here yet. Kinda like when the Apple Newton first came out. As an Engineer I was dubious as to the claims. After a while I began to think, wow, maybe they really do have something. Then reality hit and heads rolled. Keep those wishes on your list. It keeps engineers like us employed giving you more transistors with every turn of the crank. Personally, my next purchase will be a Betty with built in web browsing and IP phone and of course with improved battery life. Maybe powered by a fusion battery?

It's not crazy! It is inevitable, within the next few years. Voice activation is the next logical step in mobile GPS. There are cars with voice activated controls in production already. GPS makers are motivated by the benefits of reduced liability by incorporating voice activation.

I think your idea is fine and it does not need a powerful processor to do this. After all my cell phone allows this kind of voice recognition and I doubt it has a faster processor. But this software would have to integrate with the Garmin GPS functions and I think Garmin would have to provide it.

Adam,
You're right. Cell phones do it. They do recognize simple commands. And instead of integrating with Garmin software, it can be integrated with FastFinger which is powerful enough to achieve required tasks. :)

There is no voice recognition software available for Palm; probably never will have a one.

Do any of you experts out there know if the problem with adding voice recognition on the IQUE is a lack of software or a hardware limitation?

First I was under impression that it's a hardware limitation, but then Adam brought a good point that cell phones already have it and their hardware much less powerful then IQue.
So now I really believe that voice recognition on IQue can be achieved...

Why not? Early Palms didn't have a microphone or speaker or headphones jack either. I'm not even talking about GPS ability.
I think VR is possible on Palm and I do believe we'll have it one day. :)
The Ique is way powerful enough to make a speech rec software running.
The only things that holds back from having that implemented on "Betty" are, I believe, a) the lack of API to get to the mic input, b) the lack of labor to port an open source voice rec soft onto a Palm structure (plus there are some issues like using floating point computations and what not).
I am not saying it is impossible, only that it might take lots of time and ressources if someone is courageous enough to start the project.
Having that said, I think this idea is wonderful!
