I can't send email from my Outbox - I get an error message, "Problem sending email." I can receive mail and copy it to my Inbox with no problem, so my Internet settings must be OK. I'm using a Psion Travel Modem (Diamond Mako) to connect to a phone for a dial-up connection. Any suggestions?

Hi Paul
It sounds like your ISP probably requires CLID (Caller Line Identification), without which it will not permit you to send mail.
What's your location? Which ISP? Are you dialling from a withheld number?
Also, are you trying to send mail between countries?
Post some more info and we'll see what we can figure out. :)

As Julie says, your ISP may require that your phone line sends CLID. If your number is normally withheld, you can send it for individual calls by prefixing the number dialled with 1470
If you have more than one "Account" in Email, you may be trying to send with the wrong SMTP server - normally you must use the server of the ISP you connect to the internet with. Make sure you connect with the ISP whose server you are going to send from.
If you have more than one "Account", make sure you have set a 'default' account and if you only have the one, it should still be set as the 'default'.

Hi Julie and Mike,
Thanks for your replies. I live in the U.S. near Boston, Mass., and my ISP is SBC Yahoo. If by a "withheld" number you mean an unpublished number, the answer is no. I was not trying to send email between countries. I have just one account and it is set as the default. I checked with SBC Yahoo and they told me I was using the correct SMTP server. I'll try adding 1470 to the number. If that doesn't work, I'll call them back and ask them about CLID.
Thanks again.

I'll try adding 1470 to the number. If that doesn't work, I'll call them back and ask them about CLID. Forget this - it is something specific to UK ISPs and the UK telephone system, but you don't show your location so there was no way of knowing you were in the US :)
The problem may lie in the recent introduction by Yahoo of the need for SMTP authentication, though I don't know if it is required by the particular server you are using. The Psion Email application doesn't support SMTP authentication so some Yahoo users are having to use the server of their dialup ISP, instead of the Yahoo server, to send mail.

Hi Mike,
I believe you're right: Yahoo does require SMTP authentication. After checking some other news groups, I see that other Psion users have the same problem with their ISPs. Maybe someone has written some Psion software to add the necessary authentication to email.

Maybe someone has written some Psion software to add the necessary authentication to email. No, only Psion, Symbian, Teglogix or whatever they are calling themselves this week, could produce a plug-in for the Email application to support SMTP authentication.
There is, however, an alternative Email client which does support SMTP authentication. It is XJMail from:

Hi Paul and Mike,There is, however, an alternative Email client which does support SMTP authentication. It is XJMail We XJMail development team has just released a new version 1.30. On a request from a Polish user I have implemented LOGIN authentication mechanism to SMTP AUTH module in addition to CRAM-MD5. Though I don't know of any Yahoo mail user, some say that Yahoo supports LOGIN but not CRAM-MD5. Just for your information.
